I'm writing this in hopes that others agree with my concerns, and hopefully bring them to the attention of the people producing what seems to me to be the only well-budgeted, creative, passionately-made game due on PS4 any time soon.
I'm writing because I am VEHEMENTLY OPPOSED to the requirement that PS4 players, and indeed, any Destiny players, should be REQUIRED to subscribe to PS+ (or XBL?) in order to play the game.
Yes, I'm ranting and I'm cheap, but if I'm that honest, you can at least be honest enough to read the rest of this before making a decision.
In the previous Generation of Gaming ("LastGen"), PS+ made sense - it was a decision based purely in logic: are you one of the gamers who plays multiple new games each month, easily making back your PS+ subscription fee? Done. Otherwise, an easy pass.
In this Generation of Gaming ("CurrentGen"), PS+ is being used to EXTORT people who have ALREADY PAID for the games in question.
Here's an example: I recently purchased Worms over the PSN for $25. Nothing new, just the same old Worms experience I'd had on other consoles, transplanted to PS4. Many complained about the pricepoint, but I was happy to have my worms.
Until I found out that I could not play a SINGLE other living being, and had just paid $25 to fight cheap A.I.s.
If the game had been Free-To-Play, or even just a bit cheaper, fine. But that's a big chunk of change, and I feel like I've paid. FULLY.
Fast Forward to Bungie's Destiny (I hope you guys're reading!): it costs WELL more than $25, isn't a "one more..." game but the PS4's flagship title, and it's PERSISTENTLY ONLINE.
PERSISTENTLY ONLINE.
This is one of the biggest reasons why, in CurrentGen, it's basically a mafioso-style practice to ask people to subscribe to PS+/XBL in order to play multiplayer sections of the games. Why? BECAUSE THE ENTIRE GAME IS MULTIPLAYER! Also, we're not the ones who make that choice - BUNGIE, YOU decided to make your game persistently MMO, and YOU are planning to sell it to us for $60.
"You can buy our game, the whole game, for no small price, buuuuuut.... you can't play any of it!" It sometimes helps to hear other people repeat things we've said back to us, only in their own words, as they hear it. Perspective is difficult. Maybe Sony made this call, and you guys have nothing to do with it.
But there it is.
Don't sell us half of it. In fact, with the amount of online you're promising, don't sell us 10% of it! Sell us the whole damn game, and sell it for $100 if you have to!
But sell it and be done.
Or make a single player game.
But make up your mind, and have a little respect for the people supporting you with their hard-earned money.

XBox fans where happy to pay for it so Sony said why not? We now have a PSN that it's actually good and can at least compare with Live and we got to pay for it (we still have better games and pay less)
-
PS+ is required for multiplayer on the PS4. That has been a fact since the PS4 was first announced, and so you had to have known that when you bought [or were more likely given] the system. Knowing that, you should have known that if you bought a multiplayer game you would not be able to play with others online without PS+ As for extortion. Hardly, for $50 a year you get at least 24 free games that are forever tied to your PSN. So all that said: if you don't want to pay for PS+, get a PC and hope Destiny gets launched there sometime soon.
-
Edited by Malfeitor: 8/26/2014 8:39:14 AMI read your whole post and all I have to say is get over it. Only person your hurting with your stubbornness is yourself. $50 per year gets you 24 free games and access to multiplayer games. I paid the $50 a year on PS3 back when they didn't have 2 free games a month, just to help pave the way for a higher quality network. So when the PS4 change to network policy came out it didn't matter to me. Nothing free is high quality. Bungie is offering us top notch servers that need to be maintained and it's not free.
-
I can assure you, everyone but the companies agree with you. Multiplayer is part of the game and should be included on the price. But to be fair, the price isn't too high and it does fund their servers to run 24/7. I really rather play 60 bucks for a game and 50 to play a a full year online, than to pay 100 bucks a game with no online fee. If you buy games on a regular base, it's cheaper too.

Edited by RedTide: 8/26/2014 5:19:18 PMIt's actually a decent deal, since my ps3 still works I get games like borderlands 2 crysis 3 and bioshock infinite for free
-
If you don't want to pay don't get the new console, end of discussion. Sorry if I sounded mean but that's how it is please stop crying you wont change anything
-
Edited by dee: 8/26/2014 11:55:06 AMI would be completely fine with paying my PS+ subscription, if I wasn't sitting on the same old shitty server Sony has been using for almost a decade. That's what really upsets me tbh!

Edited by Tekn0z: 8/26/2014 5:26:24 PMThere are those of us who don't play regularly enough to justify those free games. Not everyone is constantly gaming day in and day out to play all those games as well as their own games. I don't care about other games just the ones I buy. I don't care or have time for the supposed free titles. It's not like you get physical game discs with no strings attached either. Everyone keeps saying "ooh look at how many free games, so much value for me" - yeah that might be true, except if you had no time or interest for games beyond those you buy yourself. Why should I pay for online for the games I bought in order to get games I do not even want which I will never play anyway? PS+ is just not for me. Ofcourse, when I get a PS4 I will be forced to get it, cuz online without it is just so crippled it's not even an option.
-
that is a reason I stuck with my PS3

You don't actually need ps+ for single player or to go on tower. You only need ps+ for PvP which is the same as every other ps4 game made so far. So if you are complaining about money issues you should make it to Sony as they do all the ps+ stuff on playstation devices. At first I didn't like the idea of ps+ but when I did beta access I found t really restricted in destiny. So I'm getting ps+ when destiny comes out. It's not bad to try something new and you can't complain about something you haven't tried. Ps+ for a 1 year subscription is $69. I have to say it is not much compared to actually paying internet which is much more than that. If you don't have a job or money then how are you paying destiny? If you can't afford a game then you can't afford ps+. Just saying. No harm in trying something new. That is what I'm doing. I am not trying to start an argument this is purely my own opinion and the cost for ps+ is based on my last payment for ps+ which I am going to redeem on 9/9.

The poverty is real.
-
If you think you have a better solution to allow players to connect to each other that is secure and with good net code then let us know otherwise. Shush.
-
u can play story missions aka sp without PS+ strikes raids and crucible are all mp so u would need PS+ also stop bitching
-
Last I heard, you could do everything except raids, strikes, and the crucible without PS+. But it is what it is, so either get it or don't.
-
Its very reasonably priced, you get tonnes of perks and gives you a platform to push Sony/Microsoft for improving their service. I thinks it's well worth the money and was always gonna be implemented months before release.
-
Didn't even bother to read the whole thing. Just get PS plus, you get two games every month that more than make up for the cost.
-
Edited by EvilWaterman: 8/26/2014 8:24:44 AMPS+ Is not a game, its a service, rather like your phone/TV subscription. We are paying (a good price) for use of their (Sony) infrastructure and the people to maintain it. Lets not also forget that Sony is a business/profit making organisation. They owe us -blam!- all but I personally enjoy the stuff they make and the service they supply so I pay for it. Its like me going to the pub and paying £4.50 for my fav pint, I choose to do so because I like and enjoy it and all that encompasses it. I wouldn't however pay that for a pint of piss because I don't like it, I'm not forced to buy a pint of piss either, its totally my choice.
-
Ps3 ftw. Nuff said. Bring on the hacks I got alt emails and all my shit is paid for by psn cards. No cc info on me.
-
You only need ps+ to do strikes and raids everything else you can do for free
-
PS+ costs less than xbox live and you get 6 games a month as part of the subscription. Its amazing value.
-
Now I'm going to be honest I did not read even a little bit but ps needs funds to keep fast and smooth servers running 24/7 so I heard from a friend and if you haven't noticed ps3 online sucked ass where as with ps4 it's a really big step up
-
Your money goes into supporting PSN. Don't be a tightwad and cough up for your bandwidth ;p

You said it yourself that Destiny will always be up and online. Would it be fair to Sony, Bungie, or Activision if they experienced fixed losses for maintaining Destiny's always online servers? Are they a charity or a business? Furthermore, did you realize that Sony actually loses money when they produce a PS4 console for you to buy? With the expensive input costs, I've read that Sony only makes about $10-$20 profit per console - which is negated by all of the free console replacements they send out through customer support. Grow up - and offer to pay for PS+ Or remain a child - and buy an Xbone.

If i remember right in the beta ps+ membership was a requirement for some things. (Listed like lvl requirements are) i get the fellin youll need it for the crucible, strikes, and raids. Anything you cant do alone will likely require ps+ but single player i dont think will require it. Youll still need to be online though.

Edited by Facelessbushman: 8/26/2014 5:54:42 AMThe worms thing is just greedy, you're right there. Subpar product just for the quick cash. BUT, the fact is servers cost money. Sony Microsoft Bungie Activision Anyone else paying for them is a pipe dream, it's not happening. If it makes you feel better, between employee pay, and everything else needed to keep the servers up there probably isn't a hefty profit coming from your 8 bucks a month. Sure it sucks, you paid for the console, the game, your headset, your wifi and now there one more asshole that wants his percentage. I get it, just pay for 3 month/1 year, whatever and play the game. You'll get your money's worth. I almost guarantee it. Edit: also, why on earth would you want to play destiny single player?
-
Tl:Dr, you don't NEED plus or live to play the game just for raids, strikes, and pvp so( not exactly sure bout xbox) you can still play the main story of the game. And the thing is your a ps owner and don't have ps+ then your doing it wrong, 50$ a yr with 2 free games a month for 3 platforms as well as discounts and such. Ps+ is a great deal over live, but same goes for xbl if you don't already have it then where have you been. I know some ppl will say that 50-60$ is too much but it is for an entire year. I think it's fine that the game requires ps+ and xbl for certain features
