Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." • I would love to see this put into the full version of the game. As long as I have the option to shut it off, I'm all in for it.

            • I'd really like proximity chat as an option while the game loads other players into my map map. In the tower there can only be about twenty players and with a reduced proximity chat there the useless chatter would be sliced down substantially. It would basically force you to greet a player with a wave and get closer if they acknowledge you. It may not be so simple to code but I definitely believe it to be pretty necessary for a social game like this.

              • I for one have had some epic chat moments in halo. One being my friend and I had successfully grabbed the flag and gotten into a warthog. A teammate was escorting in the ghost and suddenly burst into the halo theme song as we raced across the map. A mute would be mandatory with proxy chat. As long as some form of voice comms could be achieved for my fireteam I'll survive.

                      • But there is voice chat, or am I missing something? Actually, I found the waving and pointing extremely interesting as a way of communication. It was just like in the real world when people don't speak the same language. And it's very efficient when people pay attention to what you're pointing at. And dancing can be communication lol

                        • +1 on this thread. I totally agree. I have made a few threads on this topic just to make it noticed more, and i commented quite a bit on others peoples threads that have to do with this topic. I agree completely that this should be put in. Thank you for this post. I hope Bungie notices every single thread that is about this topic. :)

                          • I rather it be lock on to activate chat. That would keep people from butting in and you won't have the problem of hearing multiple people.

                          • I personally want no prox chat what so ever. I want to play the game and come across another guardian and se his or her skill. Maybe work together to clear out an area. After I've seen how well me and the other guardian blend I will invite to my fireteam. I don't want to hear some little kid panicking because he's in an area he isn't prepared for. I also don't want to hear some self-proclaimed pro barking orders at me. In my opinion prox chat will only hurt the game not help it.

                            • How about setting mute as hovering over someone with your gun sights and pressing on one of the d pad buttons... I don't see a point to the pointing or dancing anyways

                                • Voted no because I would hate to have prox chat. Changed vote to yes because realised loads of people would actually benefit from it, even if I personally wouldn't.

                                      • Prox chat also fulfils a major social aspect of any game. Take planetside 2. Without Prox chat that game would have been so boring. You had your screamers, spammers, music players, casual conversations, pissed off guy, troll guy, the solicitor, the leader, the drunk guy, and many more. I mainly lurked but some of the most humorous moments I have had had been of me eavesdropping on conversations.

Easily one of the most sensible and non greedy/'make the game just how I me my want it' ideas yet. With the emphasis on seamless social play this makes absolute and entire sense or if you absolutely want to be a stickler on the chat restrictions make anyone in your open world and with in proximity range easily addable to your contextual fire team without reloading or anything . and just as easily separable.

                                        • I agree completely, unlike other games where you meet people out and about (mostly PC) we don't have a keyboard or area chat. This is a brilliant idea and solution to what might make exploring boring as well as serve to help find other like minded players.
