In theory, they could make their guns shoot any shape of plasma they want if they can create a magnetic field in that shape. Imagine: a Plasma Rifle shooting blue dildos of death...

Fuel Rod Gun trigger does not work anyway. Covenant weaponry use pressure pads. So to fire the weapon, you squeeze the handle. The Spiker and Brute Shot are exceptions I believe.

Yeah, it was info available back on Bungie.old. I don't know if it's ever been specifically stated the plasma weapons use magnetic fields, but the Plasma Torpedoes use it, so I think it's a logical conclusion to make.

Yes, they use the magnetic field to direct it. Fun Fact: the Plasma Pistols electromagnetic director is located in the grip
