I believe they were around twelve. Doesn't really matter.
But if they would accidentally kill a Spartan-II because they were pissed for losing, what would the penalty be? I always thought it was a little extreme for them to use life rounds.

Even to them, the SPARTAN-II program was highly classified. They had no idea what was at stake.
