NO SOCIAL CHAT?! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!
I don't know why this isn't a bigger issue. I think this is a huge misstep in the game. I was wondering why nobody was responding to me when I'm asking everyone do you have a mic?! haha Seriously was difficult to get people to work together when trying to accomplish a task or showing someone where a chest was. What a mess. I really enjoy the game mostly but what kind of interactive game is that that is built around team work and a league of "Guardians" that can't speak to each other in an open world? Pointing, sitting, saluting and dancing is fun but kinda hacky if that is our only form of communication. I get there are trolls out there but at least give us the option of muting folks or not. Don't rely on players to have all their friends on when they play and let us meet people that are on when we are. A game is supposed to pull us in and make us feel like we are living in the world that you made for us. What kind of communications are the Guardians we are supposed to be playing have if we don't have speech? Even if you gave us a list of cued task responses to select, how convenient would that be in the middle of a huge firefight? Wouldn't it just be easier to say something to your teammates? Cmon guys. Fix this miscalculation and make the game 100%. Unfortunately I feel it seriously does affect the gameplay of the world you created.

3 RepliesNot sure if anyone had mentioned this yet but whilst in the beta, when close to a guardian i had the option of interacting by pressing r3 on my controller. One of the options was to mute the player. Cant remember any of the others but i assumed this was related to voice chat in the tower with non fire team members. Did anyone else notice this or have any ideas on it? Could be wrong

you have enough time to join a group or clan, a social chat would kill the atmosphere in the tower. since it's a group of 3 players co-op most of the time there's no need for the annoying social chat. my favourite hobby in CoD? mute mute mute mute mute mute

1 ReplyYou know - they might have listened and added that in the Final release. Quite a few people (myself included) have said we need a user option to turn on or off Proximity Chat. So cancelling your order may have been premature, I am also hoping they will have solved the Radar HUD issue too - by making it much more opaque (I kept losing it in the background clutter) and / or allowing us to move the 3 main HUD elements (Weapons / Super, Radar and Score) around ourselves.

No open voice chat please. Restrict it to fireteams and PVP only.

How can you determine if someone is cool and you'd be good friends if you can not talk to them? In my opinion destiny will be absolutely ruined without it!

It's because social chat is incredibly finicky, it's not something that is conducive to the world and gameplay, if one wants to encourage the social feeling they should commit to friending others, I had wonderful mic-less interactions with plays who I later friended and then was able to chat with, the method allows players to filter what they'd like to hear without the horrifying chore of needing to mute everyone awful they come across, which news flash, is going to be a whole lot of people. The community is not at a place where proximity social chat would not play out awfully and become bungie's biggest issue. Putting the function in and allowing people to opt out would also be completely ridiculous as it'd form a bigger barrier between players with their heads together, those that are incredibly naive, and those who will abuse the system. Bungie played their cards right and considered everything IMO, I'm so glad I will be able to enjoy a game uninterrupted by nuisances and be able to opt into speaking with those who I'd like to.

I say text chat would be fine, but I'm not going to plug my mic in to talk to randoms considering 99% of Xbox players are immature or have an annoying sibling/child in the background screaming. Also, Kinect mic is annoying.

During public events I wouldn't mind every guardian that is linked to that event being able to communicate but other than that I can deal without racial slurs, loud music and that one guy with a terrible mic!

It is easy to communicate in PC mmo games because of the keyboard without taking too much time out of playing the game. The only way to do this with a game controller I believe is some sort of Siri option or click player, option chat, send voice message.

1 ReplyEver play a game called second life? Well, it's open mic and you have to be within a certain range of people to talk to them or hear them. This made it easy to socialize and meet people. In a game like destiny it would help build a closer community. The loud annoying ones will be shunned and ignored? Thus lowering their enjoyment of the game.

3 Repliesdamn, not gonna get the game cuz of that? i made sure to gather up a fireteam if i was lookng for company. just wave a couple times at the person and send an invite. even if they dont want to play a mission, they usually accept the invite and chat for a min.

They should add more features to allow people to chat, but for people who already have a sizable friend list and clan it's a bit of a non-issue.

It doesn't break the experience for me, but it does hinder my enjoyment of the game to an extent. I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's much easier to mute the 5% of the playerbase that is irritating than to get the other 95% to join my fireteam so that we can communicate. I'm really hoping that Bungie listens to the fans on this one, because having easier ways to talk to one another in-game would make the game much more enjoyable for me.
