A Shader 1 will shade items with a corresponding 1. To check the number you look in the upgrade menu, generally rarer stuff have higher numbers. I do not think you can edit it after the character creation, which makes your character more unique. None of the options look inherently ugly, so decisions aren't extremely important

when it comes to shaders I think he meant like the gray and red of a gwalior armor on titan with a yellow center shader- which way would that affect the armor?
