There are three factions we know of in game. They control the fate of the city. You support them by fighting in the Crucible wearing their gear. Essentially, the faction that gets the most support will affect the fate of the city in Destiny 2 and so on. New Monarchy: We must unite beneath a single will Future War Cult (FWC): We must prepare for the coming war Dead Orbit: We must make our own strength, without this dying city. You can support all of them and recieve weapons and gear. When you reach level 20 you can wield a class item from any of them. All Vangaurd and Crucible experience earned while wearing the faction item will convert to Faction XP and tickets that can be spent in Faction shops.
