A Proposed Change to Elemental Damage

Watch the video before reading. What doesn't make sense to me is why shields are weak against the same energy they're made out of. An item that, if i remember correctly, the warlock vanguard was selling during the beta had a description that went something like: "From the void, a spark. From the spark, the fire. After the fire, the void.". This makes it sound like elements are weak against each other. Void beats arc, arc beats solar, solar beats void. Another thing I've noticed is that each race tends to stick to one element. The Fallen are mostly arc based (with the exception of the servitors of course), with the dregs and vandals using guns that fire bolts of arc energy, skiffs dropping large arc energy explosives before dropping off their passengers, Devilwalkers releasing an arc energy pulse and firing an arc energy machine gun whenever players got too close, and even Pike's creating electricity while boosting. The Hive are obviously void based, as we've seem from all of their guns, and the projectiles launched by wizards and ogres. Following this pattern I can only assume the vex will deal mainly solar damage, and perhaps the Cabal will deal mainly kinetic damage. That combined with the elemental weakness circle that's been hinted at, makes sense to me. Zombie's being weak against fire, and robots being weak against electricity, it just makes sense. So logically, if the Hive use mainly void energy, they're going to have void energy shields, which you'll want to use solar damage against. But that isn't how it works right now. If the player were that situation right now, they're best choice would be to use void damage against them. Using dark energy against a race based around dark energy just doesn't make sense to me. So, here's my simple request: Keep elemental damage exactly how it is, but make it so that shields aren't weak against the element they're made out of. Make arc shields weak against void damage, void shields weak against solar damage, and solar shields weak against arc damage. You can't put out fire with fire.

        • meh. Methinks that when the actual game comes out, the elemental system will not only be tweaked, but actually explained better. Either way, my shingen-C knows no bias. Void shield, solar shield, arc shield, fire shield (cold), tower shield, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D... it's all the same, baby.

          • Elemental damage felt appropriate given what we saw. Having elementally charged weapons is a smart way to ensure players take notice of this without creating the massive, "get the best fire weapon you can for this mission" scenario. If you go into the situation expecting to have to use something? Fine. Having to go into every situation or mission though? You'll see players not using any other kind of weapon if you increase or decrease the effects or damage of elemental weaponry. I'd say it's a win win either way, but I'm good with what they have right now. We know what color shield it is? Ok. We know it's weakness for a significant damage boost to the shields + headshots after that? Perfect.

            • We don't really know what their shields are made of the color just signifies what to shoot it with.

The way I gather, like the rest of the HUD, the shield color is interpretation by Ghost transmitted to you with the intent of improving your effectiveness. How would you know that enemies use SPECIFICALLY arc, solar, and void energies? The descriptions of these seem to attune to the fact that they are Traveler-based elements. We don't even know how the Traveler's elements work with the correlated true element. In other words, the shield color is shown on the screen as a message telling the Guardian what element TO USE, rather than what the shield element is.

                • I'm fine with the current system of elemental damage, I would not want to have to drop 3 times the weapon I like with different elements just to be so much more efficient if they make elements a super important thing, also it's just easier to tell weakness that way and it's not like the shield is really made of fire...

                  • We would need a better tutorial then. Nothing major, it could just be something about how the "Wizard from the Moon" we encounter early on has a Solar shield and is vulnerable to Arc. Actually we need that tutorial anyway, I dont recall seeing any info about damage types in the game.

                    • Please just use Borderlands 2 elemental effects, if elemental weapons do a negligible amount of bonus damage to a very few amount of enemies that simply just is not enough incentive to care at all. If my solar weapon never lights anything on fire and my arc weapon never shocks or stuns anyone then it's a waste of an amazing feature that is correctly implemented in countless other games to add an amazing new dimension to weapon possibilities and drastically increase the enjoyment of overall gameplay. I would be disappointed if the current model of "elemental" damage still remains when I pick up destiny on the 9th.

                      • The shield is only the color of its weakness not made of it

Dragon pokemon receive and inflict 2x the damage of dragon attacks. It works out sometimes.
