on a Major Nelson podcast, Stepto, the former director of xbox live policy and enforcement, said that cheating is defined as playing a game in any way other than the developer intended. By that definition what was shown in the video is certainly considered cheating. If the developer intended there to be a reticle or red dot there, they would have included it in the game.

  • He may have said that but that's not actually the definition of cheating. That's the definition of an exploit and exploits are not always considered cheating.

It's not irrelevant your saying that by that definition, something is cheating but that's not even the definition of cheating. So you can't decide wether something is cheating or not by a made up definition. The actual definition is very relevant to your post and thread.

  • The actual definition of cheating is irrelevant to my post. The only reason the definition by Stepto was important is because he was responsible for the enforcement of xbox live policies; one of which being that cheating is in violation of the code of conduct. I agree that the definition is flawed, but is is a good starting point.

  • By that logic, Suff Controlers & Headsets are cheating.

  • I agree with you but even a good definition has backdoors. Do you think wearing glasses is cheating? no? then why dont come every game with glasses? no offense

  • I agree with you. The definition is far from perfect. By this definition super jumping in halo 2 would have been considered cheating. Super jumping is an example of playing a game in a way not intended by the developer; however, Bungie monitored the effects of super jumping on the competitive arena and decided to allow its continuation. In short, cheating should be evaluated on a case by case basis, but the definition above is a pretty good starting point.

  • I agree, these things don't promote fair play, all they do is ruin the game.
