Breaking contact with the enemy: This is necessarily a bit faster than a fireteam rush, because you're trying to get away. The standard tactic is called the Australian Peel. The command is "Break Contact". In the standard military scheme, the fireteam is broken in half. There is one person suppressing for one person retreating, which makes coordination simple in a chaotic situation. Obviously, the math doesn't work out the same for us, and our characters have ablative shields, so we can safely loosen this up a bit to one person suppressing for two people retreating. Which admittedly makes execution a bit more complicated. In this case, the retreating guardians will turn away from the enemy, and sprint roughly 15 yards to cover. Ideally while keeping at least 5 yards of dispersion between them. The one who made it the farthest will take over suppression, and the other two will peel while he does so. Other obvious tactical problems applying this to the game: Use comm to coordinate so you peel at the same time. Make the enemy choose between targets, rather than naturally concentrate on one. This tactic is nearly useless against mobs of close quarter dregs/thrall/etc. Shield recharging. We wouldn't be executing this tactic if we weren't taking heavy fire. If you're behind cover, it may be tactically sound to have one person retreating, one suppressing, and one recharging shields behind cover. Especially in the case of those classes and abilities that speed recharge. I think it's something we're going to have to play with a bit to get a good feel for it. Grenades have the potential to slow the enemy's advance and make the tactic more effective. The Warlock's lingering damage, the Titan's flashbang, and the Hunter's tripwire, especially. The lack of peripheral vision and rapid changes in orientation could make it easy to get too laterally dispersed, and not able to support each other effectively. We'll likely stumble across more.

    • Assaulting as a fireteam in relatively open terrain, when under fire,: The general command is "Fireteam, Rush." Cover is your friend. Use it whenever possible. Individual rushes should ideally be around three seconds. Long enough for you to say to yourself, "I'm up, he sees me, I'm down". Since cover is a bit sparse, and our characters can't drop prone, the ideal is generally going to be impossible. Do the best you can. If you can shift behind the cover so you don't pop up in the same place you dropped down, do so. 2 characters suppress targets while the third advances in a rush. (The military standard is actually 3:1, but we don't have that option.) Once the rushing character is set, he begins to suppress, and one of the other characters begins his individual rush. Keep the fireteam on a relatively even line as best you can. Keep the fireteam together as best you can. Keep at least 5 yards of dispersion from your other fireteam members as best you can. Mix up the order of individual rushes so the enemy doesn't know who's going to pop up when. We do have a huge advantage. We can communicate and coordinate without the enemy overhearing us. We don't have to be hardcore riflemen, who practice until this is silent and instinctive. No, I don't think we'll HAVE to use this much. But it's a good tool to have, and I saw some locations where it would be useful. (And from what I've seen of the PvP videos, it could be a darned good team tactic there.)

      • Classes don't matter, they're all just dps and nothing more.
