The standard tactic is called the Australian Peel. The command is "Break Contact". In the standard military scheme, the fireteam is broken in half. There is one person suppressing for one person retreating, which makes coordination simple in a chaotic situation. Obviously, the math doesn't work out the same for us, and our characters have ablative shields, so we can safely loosen this up a bit to one person suppressing for two people retreating. Which admittedly makes execution a bit more complicated. In this case, the retreating guardians will turn away from the enemy, and sprint roughly 15 yards to cover. Ideally while keeping at least 5 yards of dispersion between them. The one who made it the farthest will take over suppression, and the other two will peel while he does so. Other obvious tactical problems applying this to the game: Use comm to coordinate so you peel at the same time. Make the enemy choose between targets, rather than naturally concentrate on one. This tactic is nearly useless against mobs of close quarter dregs/thrall/etc. Shield recharging. We wouldn't be executing this tactic if we weren't taking heavy fire. If you're behind cover, it may be tactically sound to have one person retreating, one suppressing, and one recharging shields behind cover. Especially in the case of those classes and abilities that speed recharge. I think it's something we're going to have to play with a bit to get a good feel for it. Grenades have the potential to slow the enemy's advance and make the tactic more effective. The Warlock's lingering damage, the Titan's flashbang, and the Hunter's tripwire, especially. The lack of peripheral vision and rapid changes in orientation could make it easy to get too laterally dispersed, and not able to support each other effectively. We'll likely stumble across more.
