When it is September 9th somewhere in the world, and you have access to your very own version of Destiny, it will be time for you to create a character that will keep you company for a good, long time. Retailers will stick to time-zones. Our servers won’t know the difference. Retailers will break street date. Our servers won’t.
What the hell does that mean?
Deej has become so good at talking about Destiny and not actually saying anything that he is unable to convey even the most basic information. Will the servers go live at midnight PST or when it is midnight somewhere in the world. I feel like this is some sort of riddle.

at a guess, when its 9/9 in nz (which i believe is at the head of the time zones) then the servers will be on-line everywhere. this makes sense, as having the server up pre-launch allows for some small maintenance etc

The servers will go online, but you will be able to play in 9/9 in your area. Knowing bungie they'll have some message saying like 'hold on there, you've still got 10 minutes left!' Or some crap idk

Alright midnight release it is then. Had a work trip plan that week but it was delayed till the following week. So I am psyched watching the countdown timer again.

Pretty sure they will have the servers up and running all day long from the second the first time zone hits 9/9/2014 @ 12:00

Probably. But where you gonna get the game from ?? PSN digital won't unlock until midnight PST (says the PSN store) and retailers won't sell a disc until midnight .....unless you know someone on the inside but good luck with that.

It means that the servers will be online, period, when New Zealand hits midnight.

I could be wrong well actually now that I think about its a strong possibility that I'm wrong but eh I'm not worried about it.

Well my thinking is he says when it's 9/9 somewhere... So to me that implies any place on earth is 9/9. My guess is 3am eastern/midnight on the west coast. Regardless, 9/8 will be the longest day of my life lol!

more like as not and by the way Deej answered I imagine the servers will be up and running before the game launches so there aren't as many server problems as there are with other MMO's that open/start servers the day of launch. meaning that the servers could still be online from the alpha and beta tests with updates and upgrades added on the fly, and if not that then the servers will be up the sunday that week starts
