That would be cool. I think a full on mode would make more sense though and I'm surprised they're going with a wait and see approach about interest in that kind of thing. Especially when they're suggesting we form our own races in Exploration mode. I can't imagine how well that would work with all the Fallen and Hive trying to gun you down while you're racing. If they gave us a dedicated mode and an editor than sure, I could see where you're coming from. Honestly though, just a dedicated mode would be enough. As it stands, I think it'll be harder to organize in the middle of the exploration maps with all the fighting going on. We'd need to agree on a path, then clear the path (which respawns almost as soon as you clear it), then have a fire team waiting at the finish to verify who won and to clear the finish line. It just seems like a lot of organization for something not even officially supported with no benefit other than bragging rights. So yeah...dedicated mode or a dedicated mode with a map editor so Bungie won't have to make new maps for that.
