They didn't really screw them over Bungie's contract was coming to an end they wanted out and Microsoft owned the rights to Halo. They could have stayed on, resigned and kept making Halo if they wanted but they decided to do something new and Halo couldn't be it. Microsoft messed up Halo on its own after they knew Bungie was leaving.
