the Soft cap is 20, gained from experience, and gear only goes up to level 20 additional experience gain will be used to level equipment, and your subclasses the Hard cap is currently unknown, believed to be 29 based on footage seen, but the way you level beyond 20 is you gain Motes of light that are dropped from defeated enemies, these motes give you level beyond 20, this will more then likely just be a showing of your commitment to the game.
