The goofiness was mostly a product of the Halo 3/ODST era, Halo 2 and CE were solidly M rated games with all the blood being spilled and horrific Flood imagery. Halo 3 demoted Truth to a saturday morning cartoon villain and except for the level Cortana the Gravemind was too over the top to be scary.
Halo 4 was a step back in the right direction.

no halo 3 was perfect and is the best piece of canon ever added to the franchise. i love gravemind in halo 3. he is my favorite incarnation of the character.
the halo 3 terminals that is. the actual halo 3 portrayal of the flood is so mind numbingly bad that it depresses me each time i think about what could have been
Halo 3 had amazing cannon. Halo 3 is best Halo.
They should have just given the job of lead writer to whoever wrote the terminals/Iris. It's unbelievable that Bungie had such a compelling narrative in their own ancillary material but their primary narrative was so, so bad...

i repeat a paraphrase of that spoiler to myself daily

Same. It's a shame really, Bungie's Halo always had good potential but they rarely took advantage of it. Their ancillary material was always more compelling imo
