Also, I expect perfection, especially on a front that doesn't involve that much design time other than simply having one single artist creating larger and better-looking medal icon assets. I'm not demanding something that would take weeks to implement.

Surprisingly a lot of design goes into the icons. It's not just create and throw in the game...

I am a graphic designer. You would be surprised how much work and planning goes into the icons.
