Beat the game? You finished a single chapter of the storyline and you think it's all over now? That's exactly what Bungie was trying to explain to everyone before all the mediocre reviews came pouring out of the flood gates. The game isn't over—not by a long shot. Future content is coming. In the meantime there are Strike missions, Raids events, PvP tournaments, etc.
The problem as I see it is that too many people are fixating on the looting aspect of the game, and less on the gameplay itself. If you do that you're going to have a bad time. While the game isn't a true MMORPG, it does share strong MMO ties in its design. One of those aspects is rare items. When something is labeled Legendary or Exotic, it truly is a super rare item. It's not some fake label they put on to encourage people to grind away and farm tons of engrams. That's not how it works.
You're just supposed to play the game as you normally would. You're never guaranteed rare items, but you can certainly increase your chances by entering yourself into time sensitive PvP tournaments and harder difficulty Strikes/Raids. Or if you're feeling lazy you can just collect Strange Coins and buy rare items off of the black market vendor. So no it's not like you're completely at the mercy of some random dice roll either. It's just that farming items isn't as rewarding as other games.
