I'm posting this for the benefit of anyone seriously attempting to piece together the lore of Destiny. Before making this post I did a quick 5 minute google search to see if anyone else has pointed out the similarirarities between Lovecraftian Horror, particularly the Cthulhu Mythos, and the Hive. I didn't find anything, so here are a few quick observations:
Black Wax Idol - The black wax idol is a consummable item in Destiny that helps you collect extra glimmer when killing hive. It's described in game as: "A misshapen figure that transmutes into Glimmer as you strike down Hive enemies. Lasts a short time. Definitely not made of wax." This could easily be a reference to a clay idol featured in the story "The Call of Cthulhu".
Unknown Horror - The defining characteristic of Lovecraftian literature is cosmic horror of the unknown. The hive embody this more than any other faction in that they are a horrifying presence hidden under the surface of the moon.
Esoteric rituals - Many of the hive missions involve you disrupting various cult like rituals in which the Hive are attempting to draw power from unknown forces. The shrine of Oryx is a good example, and some of the dialogue in that mission paints Oryx as a mysterious godlike being, similiar to the way The Great Old Ones are described in Lovecraft mythos.
I'll follow up on this if I notice any additional examples. What do you all think? Are there any Lovecraft fans out there who have noticed this as well?

Yeah, I thought that too, but did not look as closely. I mean just look at their tentacle droids. That seems pretty clear to me.
