The Destiny "Double Troll" loot system as i like to call it, can be quite frustrating. Not only is it completely random, you also have an Engram drop percentage and the second Item drop percentage to deal with.
Here's the break down:
1st table : Engram Loot Chance (rough estimate)
Based on total engrams gathered by Reddit User GrievouzOCE
Green: 290 Blue: 250 Purple: 55
2nd Table: Item Loot Chance
(FOR THE SAKE OF CLARITY I WILL POST THE COLOR OF THE LOOT NOT THE NAME OF THE RARITY)
GREEN ENGRAM RARITY:
White: 68 \ 23.45%
Green: 201 \ 69.31%
Blue: 21 \ 7.24%
Purple: 0
Yellow: 0
BLUE ENGRAM RARITY:
White: 0
Green: 53 \ 21.2%
Blue: 186 \ 74.4%
Purple: 11 \ 4.4%
Yellow: 0
PURPLE ENGRAM RARITY:
White: 0
Green: 2 \ 3.64%
Blue: 33 \ 60%
Purple: 19 \ 34.55%
Yellow: 1 \ 1.82%
With two percentages chances to deal with, I've completely given up "hoping" for upgrades past a certain point and focused on Rep leveling by way of daily Bounties. That way I know what im getting from a vendor for the time im spending to obtain it.
I think they should either do away with Engrams completely or drastically lower their drop rate so that they will guarantee Legendary or Exotic items only.
Finally, the drops should always be for the class your currently playing on. Nothing sucks more then finally getting an Exotic item from a Legendary Engram for a class you're not playing. I'm now starting a Titan just so I can use the purple arms and yellow helmet I got while playing my Hunter. So obnoxious.
UPDATE 9/25/2014
Just read today's patch notes:
Loot
He Who Shall Not Be Named
Long ago during development, the Cryptarch decoded engrams of a given color into gear of that same color. Early in 2014 we added randomness, both for better and worse, to the decrypting process. The result was that end-of-session engram decoding got a lot more exciting and the Cryptarch himself suddenly acquired a personality. Both of these experiences were positive additions to the game.
But we didn't adequately communicate the potential random outcomes of decryption. Players see what looks like the familiar metaphor of item identification, while the Cryptarch thinks he's opening a grab bag of loot. Rage sharding of blues ensues. Expect to see changes to address this soon.

Lmao I've gotten all my exotic gear from legendary engrams! The odds are just.... insane!
-
Blue becoming green on 21% MY FREAKING ASS
-
Edited by RedMesaOne: 9/25/2014 9:37:23 PMI actually think that % is a bit high, Krunk. I've only gotten one green item for every twenty blue engrams ive decoded. Then again, it may depend on your Cryptarch level which is rumored to give bonus chance to each engram decoded. I used the term "rumor" loosely since this hasn't been confirmed by Bungie yet.
-
I'm rank 15 and I got better stuff when I was 6. So I don't really think it matters.
-
Yeah, I didn't mean that outburst at you, of course. That was for the Cryptarch. I've done a lot of stuff, been to a lot of places, did some moon farming, turned in lots of engrams. Apparently it hasn't been ENOUGH engrams. My Cryptarch, maybe he's level 3 or 4, something like that. Nothing too ridiculous. I haven't seen anything change. - I have never seen a green turn into a blue, back when I couldn't see what a green item was. - I have only found ONE legendary engram drop, EVER, which of course was not legendary. - All of my mailbox prizes have been a Mote, a coin, or something blue. - If I had to guess, I would say that a few out of ten blues were green.

Edited by RedMesaOne: 9/26/2014 3:53:37 PMMine is sitting at Level 24 and I haven't seen an increase in rares when decoding. The only thing I noticed that got better was the stuff he sends me in the mail when he levels up. Hehe "moon farming" I think im going to start using that term when describing psychedelic recreational drug use.

wait, level 3 or 4? i didn't start getting legendary engrams from cryptarch til at least 8 or so. now it's 13, and that dude rarely lets me down. well, actually lately i've had some bad luck, but it's at a point where i'm gearing my other toons, so idgaf.
-
Wow you guys are cryptarch casuals. My cryptarch is level 24. Still makes blues into greens, legendaries into blues, and gives more blues than purples in the mail reward the last few level ups.
-
Thx man the double troll loot system made my day :)
-
What is the purpose of the cryptarc level? I'm at 16 now and since it was past 8 all I get is crap from legendaries. I get better stuff from rares like coins or motes and even then it may be one out of 10.

Edited by RedMesaOne: 9/25/2014 9:07:34 PMFrom what I've read it only helps with the quality of items he sends to you in the mail. Which usually happens each time he gains a level. Some people are claiming that his level improved the bonus chance that hell decode a better item but there no proof of that being the case yet.
-
Well lately even those have all been rare. When I hit lvl. 5 I got three legendary, only one was a legendary item. After that I may have gotten only two more....
-
I haven't seen an increase in higher quality items and ive got the smug SOB up to lvl 23.
-
Same here, but mine is 24 or 25, can't remember. The -blam!- still gives me greens from blue engrams, and blue from Legendary engrams. And only blues in the level up reward mail. GTFO Cryptroll.
