And an exclusively PvE player might not either. Up until I got my Invective today (from an exotic bounty), the only exotics that I'd gotten came from a PvP drop and purchasing one from Xur with motes of light (many of which were earned in the Crucible). Now I probably play two to three times as much PvE as I do PvP, but I have yet to receive an Exotic drop through PvE.
Guaranteeing great gear to the best PvP players would simply put an even bigger gap between them and the rest of the group, which would chase away they average players from PvP . . . that's just a bad system.
Now I would be fine with some sort of system that granted a few extra marks or some bonus reputation (fully in line with the goal of the Crucible, as stated in-game) or even cosmetic stuff (unique shaders, epic marks/bands/capes, etc.), but regularly rewarding skilled players with gear that amplifies their skill even further over the players that they are already beating is just a recipe for a stagnant future for Destiny's PvP.
