The fallen: the first enemies you face, separated into houses or factions, with different ranks based on honour. Emit light when killed with a headshot, not darkness like the cabal.

I believe the Fallen emit ether when they die.

Yeah, they are the [b]Fallen[/b]. They used to be great, until something brought them down (possibly the Traveler). Also, the Cabal don't release "darkness" when killed; it's the color of the atmosphere they breath in their suits.

It's supposed to be their "souls," but I think Bungie made them look like light for a reason.

The black stuff is a mysterious liquid that the cabal use in their suits and nobody knows what it is (read that in a grimoire card somewhere)

I think its supposed to accommodate for heavier gravity where they are from. Would explain the gush from the pressure equalizing, and also why such big creatures can be somewhat nimble.
