I sometimes visit this site called Survival Life and follow them on facebook.
Today, they posed an interesting question and I'd like to hear your answer. (Yes YOU!)
It’s been 5 years since the collapse of civilization. Clothes and shoes are in high demand but in extremely short supply. Everything has already been looted long ago. Materials that could have been used as makeshift clothing and food nowhere to be found. In your immediate surroundings, clothes and shoes aren’t available for bartering. Your only hope to clothe your family and protect them from the coming winter would be to either steal from others or to peel the clothes off of corpses, and risk being infected by a disease. What would you do in this situation and why?

Give them bottle caps and NCR Credits.
-
Do I have any way to kill this disease?
-
> Find evil person with clothes. There will always be some > Kill person/ rob them > give family close

Edited by anyposs: 10/2/2014 2:41:44 AMI guess I'll start taking notes from this Mick Dodge guy ^^
-
I don't understand how I've been able to survive with my family for 5 years, I'll just repeat my survival methods, nobody has to die.
-
Edited by joibasta: 10/2/2014 2:35:05 AMDepends, what type of father am I and how old are my kids?
-
Virginia winter is a joke, unless it's the nuclear winter. But Nuclear winters can't actually happen I'll just make my own clothing
-
Get clothes from the dead and wash them...? The only problem with getting clothes from the dead would be E. coli.
-
Can't I just rip some clothing off of the dead guys but then wash it in a river? Also, I could just go south and find a boat.
-
Deer hide makes excellent clothing material. Hog hide makes decent overcoat layer.
-
Kill a large animal. Deer etc. skin it and make clothes. If needed, dugong hide. To keep warm. Or look for a cave like structure like a public bathroom or an abandoned house. Then like minecraft... Create a deep hole and hide in it lol
-
If I'm still alive and able to support my family after 5 years, I assume I have picked up adequate survival skills Therefore, I know how to hunt and use deer hide for clothing Or I can take the clothes of dead people and wash them And also loot them while I'm at it
-
Ambush and kill off the weak for their supplies. Let's be realistic here, Flood. They would most likely do the same, and as OP said, materials used for clothing and food (Deer, other animals..etc,etc) are nowhere to be found. There are no laws in that kind of world. Kill or be killed, and I ain't dying from some shitty disease. That'd make me a pussy. If I'm dying, I'm dying in a blaze of glory.

Couldn't I just boil the clothes? I wouldn't steal from others. Unlike what post-apocalyptic scenarios imagine, people will be forced to band together. I wouldn't risk long-term beneficial support for a short-term answer for one need of many.
-
Become a mushroom.
-
Steal, I've always wanted to be a pirate
-
I would do what is needed within reason. I would still the bare minimum I require. Steeling from someone is wrong. It would always be in the back of my mind did I cause that persons death
-
I fap on people's clothes so they give them to me.
-
Why can't I use pelts from animals I hunted for food? I know how to brain tan and everything. Much better option in the winter. I'll probably peel the clothes off of corpses. Hopefully I won't get sick. If I can collect a lot of clothes and wash them, I could make a killing of the trading.

Edited by Cloaked Goliath: 10/1/2014 11:34:49 PMI don't mean to be pessimistic, but my family would probably die. I will answer your question as trying to clothe a single person. If I was put into that scenario, I would pillage for clothing. If clothing is in such short supply though, we can pick off the corpses clothing and boil it, bleach it, everything I can to make them clean. If it is too risky, I wouldn't hesitate to steal clothing from other people. The endangering of those I steal from will be a burden, but it wouldn't be the first. I will only take a few pairs of clothing, especially shoes. Because other people must survive as well.
-
Scavange. Five years down the road, so many people would have succumbed to disease, starvation, and banditry that there would be plenty of things to pick from. Boiling and some grain alcohol should be enough to give me a comfortable enough chance at evading any diseases on the clothes.

Edited by Legend To None: 10/1/2014 11:52:01 PMWell there has to be blankets on these corpses as well. I would risk my own health to get these blankets and clothes. Then I would get a bucket full of water and boil the clothes in the water and let em dry over the fire. In hopes it would kill the bacteria on the clothes. Over all of this I would be learning to hunt to get fur and food. And I would work agreements with others rather than stealing cause stealing would not work out as much as you would want it to☝️
-
Stealing from different people. That way you can mix the clothes and people won't easily recognize them. I'm assuming people would be able to recognize clothes because of how rare they are and thus grow attachments to them.
-
Peel the clothing from the dead. If I steal clothing then that means I'm dropping my morals and honestly what's the point in living if you have no morals. Once you lose your morals you're already partially dead.

Find a garbage bad and stuff it with leaves.

Stab a ho. They ain't loyal.
