Let me tell you why I think there will not be any trading in Destiny (for a long time, anyway, if they ever DO make that decision). From a psychological standpoint, your concept of people getting tired of farming for gear is wrong. Or rather, it would be wrong if the loot system was working optimally. The concept of reinforcement in psychology can be a little tricky if you're not familiar with it or don't care much about the subject, but without excessive explanation: the random loot drop "table" is a type of reinforcement "schedule" which has a payout with an indeterminate interval. Loot drops are positive reinforcement, meaning that getting a loot drop strengthens (makes more frequent) the behavior that triggered the drop. This intermittent scheduling is the strongest reinforcer; it is the same concept that drives slot machine addictions. So really, this grinding for engrams thing they have going on is exactly what they want. They want you to see that occasional purple engram and flip out, because that strengthens your desire to keep farming. Kind of. Obviously everyone is different, but the majority of people are sheep. Geeks tend to be deep(er) thinkers, so I'm going to hazard a guess that many people on these forums feel like they are above such tactics... but making accurate self-assessments is a psych lesson for another day.

 • I think most of us know we're in the Skinner box. Not sure what to do with that information, though.

 • Lol. I love this post. I agree to a degree, but someone forgot to tell Bungie that you still occasionally need to actually put a treat in the treat ball once in a while to keep us lab rats interested. I've received a whopping one exotic from a strike reward. Everything else, legendary or exotic, I have either earned through a nightmarish bounty or purchased. Of course there was my first Nightfall this week, which awarded me with an exotic helmet I already had. It quickly became shards.

 • You're both right, as I pointed out in other posts though, we wouldn't be talking about any of this if there were more things to earn/win in the first place. One legendary engram for 20 hours of gameplay, which then turns into ass shards, is not enough to get people to continue like lab rats. But the alternative is to up the rates, and then everyone gets bored because there's only like 3 exotic helms for each class, for example. So Bungie is left trying to convince people that this fence painting is exciting enough to keep us playing until the next money grab. They're lucky they did the shooting stuff well, cause for an MMO/RPG/loot game, the content for all 3 of those genres is severely lacking.

 • Well I did say that would be the case if the loot system were working optimally. ;)

 • You did indeed. I stand corrected.
