Not true actually. I had some loot sent to me when my buddies and I spread out to help complete patrols faster. All were sent to inbox. (Rare or higher items)

How do you know it came from one of your buddies when you weren't near them?

You can get engram drops even if you don't kill the enemy you're looking at, if a team mate kills 'em.
