if you level it up all the way (not upgrade just level) before sharding you get 5-6 energies

I thought so too, but I've had fully leveled items, upgraded until shards are needed also give me two. I think it's random also.

I"ve heard this only works for weapons and energy, not armor and shards.. which sucks cuz I need armor way more than I need energy :S
