Here I will try to explain a possible origin of Rasputin and his "demise" at the end of The Collapse.
Rasputin
Rasputin is a Warmind from Russia. He was created during The Golden Age before The Collapse and was believed to have been destroyed during the event. During a mission in Destiny's story lol. Rasputin is said to still be alive or active.
Quote form Dinklebot:
GHOST: They didn't get much. Kept hitting an active firewall. Old Earth, Russian. The legends are true. A Warmind did survive the Collapse. Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived. And he's protecting something here in the Cosmodrome. We have to find a way to reach him.
The Warminds: Are just as the name says. They are highly intelligent advanced AI's Created for warfare. There were many other Warminds (8 to be exact) created for different purposes. Rasputin was created to defend Earth and stop any threat to humanity at all costs.
The Collapse
I bring us back to this line:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from the Grimore Card -
Ghost Fragment: Darkness
V113NNI070XMX001 SECRET HADAL INSTANT AI-COM/RSPN: SOLSECCENT//SxISR//DEEPSPACE CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT TRANSIENT. NULLSOURCE. NULLTYPE.
This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT.
Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. Event duration ZERO POINT THREE SECONDS. Event footprint includes sterile neutrino scattering and gravity waves. Omnibus analysis detects deep structure information content (nine sigma) and internal teleonomy.
No hypothesis on event mechanism (FLAG ACAUSAL). Bootstrap simulation suggests event is DIRECTED and INIMICABLE (convergent q-Bayes/Monte Carlo probability approaches 1).
No hypothesis on deep structure encoding (TCC/NP-HARD).
Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY.
Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION. Activate VOLUSPA. Activate YUGA. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action.
I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses.
SKYSHOCK ALERT= network wide alert aka threat con warning level
SECRET= classification
HADAL= defined as: of, relating to, or being the parts of the ocean below 6000 meters (about 20,000 feet); being paired with a classification I think this can be translated as "top secret"
INSTANT = type of message, guessing like out text message system used in blue force trackers currently
AI-COM/RSPN= the sender, communication from RASPUTIN AI Warmind
AI-COM: AI communications?
RSPN: Rasputin
SOLSECCENT: SOLar SECurity CENter?
SxISR=This is what the message is Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance report; not sure on the Sx part. maybe the type of asset, sensors?
DEEPSPACE= Location reported from
CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT= Current activity
TRANSIENT, NULLSOURCE, NULLTYPE= These should be descriptors for what is being observed, these entries inform us the contact was new with unknown elements
Blueshift: phenomenon caused when an object is approaching the viewer-opposite of redshift, when things are moving away
VOLUSPA: Norse mythological tale in which a seeress relates a series of stories to Odin.
Significance: Almost certainly because it contains the story of Ragnarok, the Norse version of the apocalypse in which the world is destroyed. May refer to activating defenses for a massive battle.
YUGA: A Hindu cosmological period of time.
Significance: A YUGA is composed of a cycle from a Golden Age to a Dark Age and back again. May refer to the idea of bunkering down and waiting the enemy out before counter attacking.
CARRHAE WHITE: a defensive plan? Named after a battle in which Roman soldiers were surrounded by mounted archers and annihilated -- Does the name refer to the idea of defending against an enemy that surrounds you? In which case, why name it after a battle in which the defenders were slaughtered? Or is Rasputin going to try to surround the invaders?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This seems to be the point at which The Darkness came in which Rasputin did his duty, to protect mankind.
Again I bring this line up:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from a grimoire card that explains Rasputin's battle with the Darkness.
...from a red space before victory
I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone.
They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn.
Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT.
Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?
I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well:
IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins.
I am made to win and now I see the way.
Card not yet acquired
Rasputin refers to his brothers and sisters the Warminds who were defeated by the darkness. He now bears the heavy burden of saving the world and stopping the darkness. We created him to be stronger than us and survive the unthinkable and he is stronger than us and has survived The Darkness.
He then Refers to IT. The Darkness, something so powerful he doesn't know what to call it or how to describe it. he met it at the gate of The Garden (The Black Garden?) It was stronger than everything and yet he survived.
The Darkness swallowed him and made him stronger. IT showed him how to defeat it, making him stronger. To beat the darkness you need Light. The Light being souls. The Traveler contains these souls and converts them into light. The Darkness consumes light and devours it entirely because there is more of it. Rasputin finding this to be the only way to stop The Darkness, let his shield down. Meaning he let the darkness in so that he could sacrifice millions of humans to gain an EXTREME amount of Light. This however only wounded The Darkness enough for it to go away for a long period of time. Rasputin how ever did ensure that enough human survived so that he could complete his mission which is to protect humanity at all costs. Rasputin saved us and then went into hiding, plotting and preparing for The Final War with The Darkness which he plans to win. How you may ask we can only wait and see.
Edit: "I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?"
An Aurora Knife is a small blade...impossible to fight the darkness with that.
An Aurora is a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, usually near the northern or southern magnetic pole. (Google an Image of It)
A Knife is a weapon...
Aurora= Light
Knife=weapon
Aurora Knife = Light Weapon

good stuff! I just have a feeling that the Exo Hunter in game is somehow linked with Rasputin. I am calling it!
-
This stuff is really fascinating and I like how you try to link the literal in-game text / events with your hypothesis instead of just jumping to conclusions everywhere and 'filling in the gaps' however you see fit. I even read the links about VoG and fWc. I really wish someone out there was doing a lore breakdown video series like EnB did with Dark/Demons souls. I started to try and compile the Grimoire into a more viewer friendly and narrative friendly coherent body but I just got too busy. Do you have a link on the Nine?
-
Still no Nine lore? I've dug up a bit myself but nothing conclusive, I want to see your theory

thank you for sharing.

That's really cool. Where is the cinematic explaining this?

Edited by Anthem92: 10/19/2014 8:25:48 PMYou might be interested in ghost fragment: old Russia. It mentions skyshock. And from what I can gather I think rasputin tricked the humans into unlocking a powerful super weapon that was based on antimatter. (Just a hunch but I think the "stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp" might be this weapon, and the aurora knives might be guardians? Small instruments of the light capable of precision strikes against the forces of darkness.
-
Wanted to make a point about the quote, "I fought IT with Aurora Knifes and the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp." I'd like to focus on that last part, stolen un-fire of singularities. This sounds like a slap rifle (Vex Weapon). Then again, he could be talking about "blasts" of light (think golden gun).

Edited by ELRaSun: 10/18/2014 4:29:00 AMI wonder if anyone has translated what the voice is saying after you seize "The Old Machine" on Mars. If you turn the TV up, you can hear a humanoid voice speaking. I wonder if it is a message, either an old one left by Rasputin, or a current one directed at the ghost.

Rasputin has 3 syllables. Half life 3 confirmed!
-
You are amazing.

Edited by LukeWarmSoup: 10/17/2014 10:46:50 PMIf you go into the DLC area for the Earth raid (Possibly releasing with the House of Wolves DLC) you can see a gigantic AI through a large glass window. Perhaps this is Rasputin. I hope it is. HADAL could be referring to the fact that he has hidden himself in an underground bunker perhaps. If you haven't glitches into the Earth DLC I recommend watching videos or doing it yourself. A lot can be learned about lore through this.

I think aurora knives might mean harnessing solar flares to use as defences. Also I think the bit about the gate to the garden is unrelated to the Black Garden. I think it just refers to the solar system and the perimeter defences. I'm not sure if anyone in the lore is referring to the Darkness. It seems like a term exclusive to post-Collapse propaganda. The object that Rasputin detects outside the solar system is more likely to be the Traveler. The gardener could just be another AI. I'm not sure about this though. Admittedly 'gardener' sounds like a good name for the Traveler if it gird a it'd terraforming planets - but then why not just call it the traveler if that's what 'we called it' ?
-
I think Ras actually gave up. Not that he fought back. He's a machine. He has no light to offer and so is of no value to the darkness. The problem is they built him to survive. One command over road another. He is probably sitting next to the darkness right now. Un effected by it. In order to survive he had to take the world literally off its shoulders and in doing so watched it turn to ash. But he survived. As programmed.

Before I keep reading "Secure isis"? It says that? Lol

Fun read!! Thanks for compiling this!

I was always under the impression that the Traveler was the narrator of the "...from a red space before victory" Grimoire card, namely describing a time it fought the darkness before and how it will inevitably win. The passage "I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well" seems to describe the Traveler dropping it's defenses and sacrificing much of it's light to create the ghosts and scatter them among the ashes of humanity. I also believe the card does refer to the Black Garden, and that it was not always the domain of the Vex or a place of darkness. "The Gardener" could refer to another, more powerful, Traveler-like being that was bought down by the darkness. Unlike "The Gardener" the Traveler is willing to make itself alone and dormant, cut off from the coming and goings of the universe. The garden was the last battle ground lost to the darkness. This is why the Traveler was found on Mars, the same planet we find the gate to the Black Garden. Mars, of all places, is hardly the ideal location for the Vex to keep the gateway to their inner sanctum on. Why not Mercury or Venus, planets they have near total control over, rather than a planet they barely have a hold on and are in constant dispute over with the Cabal? Simple, they didn't create the gateway, only a way to access it. It's worth noting that this card is found in the Legends & Mysteries section of the Grimoire, directly next to the Black Garden card and that it has a background image of the Black Garden prior to being acquired. This would explain the parallels people have drawn between how the card's narrator fought "IT" and the Guardian supers, and possibly give an insight to the Traveler's origins before arriving in our system.

Rasputin is the Vex, and the Traveler.
-
I want a petition to have the official name of "ghost" to be changed to dinklebot

Rasputin is in seraphim vault. RAS-3 is the area name and theres a huuuuuge computery structure therewhich is him

You spelled "extreme" wrong

Awesome read thanks a lot OP!
-
The way I read is aurora knife is blade dancer power, stolen un-fire singularities is a nova bomb, and my sweat was earthquakes is fist of havoc. Seems like he is saying he held all the power of the guardians or perhaps was responsible for their creation. And shrugging his shoulder so the billions fell down I read that as creating billions of guardians because he learned in his fight that he couldn't beat IT alone that's what he leaned was he needed an army. Something his brothers and sisters didn't do.
-
I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?... Maybe it could also stand for the three specials for each class. aurora knife= arc blade Fire of singularities= sunsinger Sweat was earthquake= titan smash. Just an idea though
-
Interesting. Also, Rasputin refers to a gardener who held power beyond his own, this would likely be the Traveler. This also makes me think about how some rogue organizations thought the traveler tried to use our solar system as a shield to hide behind, but what is She were using it as a sword, and instead stayed to defend because She finally found one with some kind of traits She wanted or something. "...and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone." Guardians. Ghosts. She didn't plan to fight alone, maybe another reason why She stayed.
