What's the point of him letting his dense down? I'm sure no matter what there would've been a lot of casualties for the traveler to turn in to light. So with those casualties and his defenses up maybe they would've beaten the darkness? And do we know if the traveler is truly good or Not yet? Seems really weird how the traveler gets more powerful using our souls, maybe that's all the traveler really wants.
