Here's a scenario that I have been contemplating for a while. What if the vex aren't evil at all? Stay with me, I'll try to explain the best that I can. When we're first introduced to the vex, a mysterious stranger that was not "forged in the light" tells us that they are "so evil that they despise other evil". As far as I see it, this strangers only goal seems to be destroying the vex. She never talks about any of the other races. Why are we taking the word of the shadiest character in this game? One thing she says is true; they are killing the other races. They fight the fallen on venus and the cabal on mars. Unless I'm wrong, I don't remember the game ever showing them as an invasive force. In fact, the two major times times that we fight them (the black garden and vault of glass) we invade them. Also, keep in mind that on mars we are told that they're not planning to invade....they're leaving. Going home. So, here's my thought. What if the vex are Rasputins defense against the darkness? "The gatelords protect the realms that the vex lock out of time". Rasputin fought the darkness and knew that it didn't have the power to destroy it, so it just prevented it from escaping and spreading further. Like i said, it's just an idea. What do you guys think?

  • I really like this idea, because an any theory you go with, the vex don't seem to be evil really, but it may be the fact that there machines and machines aren't really evil, evil is a humanistic trait. But then again the vex could be a type of organism in a mechanized form. Keep digging, never stop questioning.

  • I posted this above yours, but I like the idea. The main counter argument I have is - why are we so intent on fighting back our own defense? Wouldn't Rasputin let us know when one of our Ghosts hack into terminal after terminal, or let the Speaker know? Or does Rasputin believe that his Vex defense still has a better chance against IT than we, the guardians, do. If the latter is true, then since the Vex are biomechanical, then maybe they (like him) adapt and learn from their enemies. Rasputin would then be essentially using Guardians to "train" his defense to be even stronger for when IT returns for the final battle. #conspiracy As a sidenote - Dinklebot does speak of the Vex destroying planets within days. He talks about that at the same time we learn that the Vex are vacating Mars (I think). So maybe the destroying of said planets are the final stages of their departure? The Vex inhabit a planet, once invaded to where they can no longer defend, they depart and destory the planet so nothing is left behind for their enemy?

  • They're not destroying planets though... they turned 1 into a machine. Considering the rate at which they did this, and how long they have been around, they could have mechanized ever planet in the solar system before we ever left our own atmosphere. Maybe mercury was chosen strategically because it couldn't be terraformed like the others (perhaps due to extreme temperatures/conditiond). They were on venus for billions of years and never mechanized that planet. Honestly, what better way to fight a darkness that destroys all light that it touches than with an endless army with no light of their own?

  • True - but it still leaves us to question why we are fighting them if they are our defense. Maybe since they are not solely mechanical, Rasputin does not have full control?

  • We only seem to be fighting them because some mysterious shifty-eyed exo told us to. We chased them down because we were told to. It seems to that while the guardians are necessary to destroy the darkness (because of their light), the vex are buying us the time that we need to reclaim the strength that we lost. Maybe Rasputin knows that us guardians need to think that we are alone in this fight, so that we don't place all of our faith in the vex to save us.

  • Well the traveler thought the Vex were evil enough to stop them, and I'm pretty sure a Semi-god creature could tell the difference between friend or foe.

  • If you're referring to the battle that the speaker "could tell us about", but didn't, I don't think that battle was against the vex. I think it was a hive invasion (which would explain how they got the shard of the traveler).

  • When did the traveler stop them?

  • When the ghost was talking about Mercury being taken over by the vex he then said "They would have done the same thing to earth if the Traveler hadn't stopped them"

  • I like that idea...but, we also do communicate with the Speaker, and our Ghost; the Stranger is not the only one who we listen to. Somewhere within the forums, someone made an interesting connection with the Stranger, that they are more of a rebel who left the Guardian order. And when the Speaker expresses his hope of Dinklebot choosing wisely this time, that they are referring to the Stranger going off on her own...she clearly knows way more than we do (even with grimoire), so maybe she is trying to direct Guardians the wrong way to help her "cause". But anyways, we mainly follow the advice of Dinklebot, who is sending information back to the Speaker. And we are rewarded by multiple people for what we do to the Vex throughout the tower...so if they are Rasputin's defenses, Rasputin is the only one aware of that. I really hope more of these stories become apparent through future content.I feel like an intriguing book could be written once all of the puzzle pieces are put together.

  • To be honest, my only concern where destiny is concerned is that the story they give us is not as good as the one that some of these guys are pulling from the clues we've been given.

  • Also, why did no one in the tower tell us about any of the races that we encountered? We fought them back once, so their presence must be known. I don't think the speaker or the vanguard know nearly as much as they pretend to.

  • Their presence is know, you are the only that don’t know anything cuz you were dead and with amnesia (as it seems) and for some reason you are not interested enough to ask

  • With the speaker and stranger obviously withholding information, I honestly can't blame dinklebot and our guardians for not asking those questions. Better to figure things out for ourselves than to be told "I could tell you..." or "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain".

  • or we're intentionally being kept in the 'dark'.. as pawns of a sort. the stranger talks about the importance of taking a side.. 'even if it is the wrong one'.
