You've never played world of warcraft, have you? There's only 1 type of top tier armor, everyone that gets to the top tier looks the exact same as everyone else that gets to the top tier. It's a symbol of strength and accomplishment. Faction armor IS important as well, as it's the best way to get the armor that will boost you (Unless RNGsus was your best friend the entire time) to the level that makes playing the raid possible.
Edit: there's only one type of top tier armor per class, as there is in destiny.

we didnt want world of warcraft. we wanted somthing different. its just another fps with gear so everyone can act like an elitest wen they hit 30. but maybe they thought no one would go through such a pain in the ass raid( also very very very -blam!-ing cool your first time) so make it exclusive and there u go. u know there out there jumping off cliffs now

I love playing through the raid. I've not completed it yet, my group is finally at the point where we are getting aethon down to a sliver of health but we end up getting wiped due to letting our guard down lol. The other reason I love playing is because of the stories you can tell, but I don't have time to tell them right now..... Anyways, the raid is difficult, especially so if you don't knock the boss off the edge, which I've tried but never gotten down, so I shrug it off and try to shoot him to death. Now, going to armor, exotic armor pieces give you the ability to hit Light 30. Granted, you can only equip one piece, that's one piece of armor that allows you to look different from every other person. I've honestly yet to see another warlock with Skull of Dire Ahamkara, plus if you get the right shaders, you can add more customization. Right there, you're already at more than many mmo's with respect to armor customization. I think that some people want to be literally the only special snowflake with armor that rivals GODS, sure, there's not much armor, but there's enough for people to add their own unique flair. If you're thinking, "one piece of exotic armor is hardly customization." I would like to point out that there are at least three helmets, two torso pieces, two arm pieces, and I'm not sure about legs honestly. That should be enough to make quite a few different looking sets for people.

haha i got the skull! never seen someone else with it either. its op as hell if u pvp and use life steal

Lol I don't even pvp, but it's still op as hell for pve. The helmet I really want for my sunsinger is the one with the wings that wrap around the sides. I always forget it's name, but it's a pretty epic looking helmet.
