The Collaspe was a massive war in which untold numbers of countless people died. The Awoken Grimore card states this: "It is said that the Awoken were born in the Collapse, descended from those who tried to flee its wrath. Something happened to them out on the edge of the deep black, and they were forever changed." Further Grimore cards state that Awoken survived in refugee camps on Earth, seeking the Last City in the waning years of the Dark Age. From the Ghost Fragment of the Dark Age: "From the deep black came the Awoken, their eyes haunted." Further more the Dark Age was when the Ghosts began to seek out dead to become Guardians. "And among them came the Ghosts, beginning their search" Awoken existed and made their way to Earth long before the existence of Ghosts were confirmed. Dead Awoken everywhere from the Collapse and the Dark Age to make up the Awoken Guardians of the City Age which is the age we are in now.
