They were originally humans, but the only way to be Awoken is to A) Be at the Collapse or B) Be descendant of an Awoken. Both cases require your character to be post Collapse, but your character is Pre-GoldenAge

The lore states that the Awoken were made when they went to the darkest places in the galaxy after trying to escape the Collapse. The in-game character selection tells you that your character is a descendent of the First Awoken. [spoiler]Side Note: "The First Awoken" Is referenced in the grimoire about the Nine[/spoiler]
