To all those complaining about males playing females...

I've seen threads of the like since I first went through the forums, and it seems like some people find it hard to understand that the reason behind it is that there is a possibility. It's as simple as this: If I can have a sandwich, why not? If I can have a coke, why not? If I can have both, why the -blam!- not? I'm really curious about why this disturbs people so much. Like, seriously. This is not a dating site, so don't expect a female avatar to be a female, and don't expect a male character to be a male. It just doesn't work like that and shouldn't ever work like that. Games are the worlds of possibilities. In a game, especially in the open ones with character creator, you can be whatever you want. And that's great. There is no need to make your in game avatar similar to you in any way. If you want to, you can, obviously, but there is no need for that. Lots of people play games to inmerse themselves in a totally different world than theirs. They don't want to be the rutine-absorbed mcdonalds worker, or the test-stressed student. They want to inmerse themselves in a different reality- and the best way to do that is to empathize with the character without feeling that you are the character. You know, like those paper things called books. That's one of various reasons. Some people find the male models of this game not really appealing. I have to agree, yet I love how my awoken looks. Some other people believe the tale of the smaller hit box. Others simply like better the female figure. And all of these reasons are equally valid. So, I'm really asking you: why do you feel so disturbed about males playing as females? You are free to answer in a respectful way. If you are going to: - Mess about their gender identity/expression in a harmful way - Say things like: "Cause all 'em wanna be trannies m8". You can say that you believe they feel like women in their innerself, but tranny is pretty much offensive. - And, in general, be rude Your comment will not be taken into account. Basically you can say whatever you want without being rude. Not that hard uh? SO: If you've read this far, thank you. If you are going to be rude, leave. If you are going to be nice, treat yourself with cute kitty pictures. Edit: I forgot to say this: There's those people that say "males should play as males. They have gender problems if they don't boohoo". Well then, following that rule humans should play as humans and as nothing else, if not they have species related problems. Yet, I see no one complaining about people playing as exos/awoken. Edit 2: When I said I wouldn't take rude comments I was not joking, I swear. Not by a second. Edit 3: Comments saying that suicide is tha fault of the one comitting it are counted as rude, and therefore I will not take them into account.

  • I don't mind playing as a female, however if I have a choice I'd rather be a male. Saying you'd rather stare at a female model is no excuse though, considering this is a first person shooter, it's only third person a small portion of the time. Even if the game was third person, you wouldn't be staring at your character, you'd be playing the game. I have nothing against people who play other genders by choice, I just think excuses like that are rather stupid.

    • The female human dance is one of my favourite dances in the game, so I made my warlock a human female. I had originally made a male exo for my warlock, but I got over it by level 8 and deleted it. My hunter was made before the warlock, but since I already had the plan to make a male exo, I decided my awoken would be female. My primary is a male human titan, he's my 'avatar character', made to represent me in Destiny. Both my secondary characters are just there for me to experience the other classes, have extra opportunities to earn weekly rewards (nightfall, raid, weekly heroic), get the sub-class achievements and have a use for all those random hunter/warlock gear drops I got. That's it. They're not some attempt to troll, a misplaced sense of 'gender identity' or some other wild theory as to why guys play female characters. I spend most of my time playing as a male character, so when I swap to another character it shouldn't feel like I'm just playing the same character with different abilities. I'll probably end up deleting the hunter and warlock when I'm less interested in playing multiple characters, and just focus on my titan, the only one of my characters that matters to me, who is a guy. I agree with you OP in that a character in a game does not equate to an expression of gender identity.

    • My hunter is a female because I think hunter armor looks better on the girl version.

I am a male. Whenever play any sort of game that allows character creation I make two types of characters. The first is my self insert avatar, the toon that i design to look like me (and, btw, Saints Row 2 wins the award for best character creation system ever, as I was able to make my char look EXACTLY like me in both face and body type). The second is a female. I always make female characters. I think it stems from an interest in gender roles, the subverting of said roles and the exploration the female condition. In games that allow deep role playing I even like to attempt to put myself in the feminine mindset of the character. I'd like to think it has, in some small way, helped me understand, empathize with and respect the women in my own life. Video games are a great way to get outside yourself and into someone else's head space. I encourage pushing the boundaries of your own comfort zones whenever possible. It has helped me come to realize there are more ways of thought than just my own. I think a lot of this "GamerGate" nonsense and basic hostility towards women in game culture would disappear if everyone practiced this.

    • I got 2 reasons why I use a female character rather then a male. First reason is just the simple fact that most games it is always playing as the big burly male hero and at lease it is a change. The second reason, and possibly my biggest grip is there are no beards in the game for the males.

      • Lol, this is a video game, I think most people agree that you can play as any fictitious character you desire... Big buff guy, petite Hunter female, robot, who cares? This isn't ME. makes absolutely no difference what you play as ;)

      • I make characters that I think look nice. And I don't think a bulky male has any elegance about him.

      • I had my girlfriend create warlock so its an awoken female, otherwise it would have been another exo male. She never plays but i still leveled it up as "her" character but also so i have a warlock

      • I picked all females for my characters because i thought they would have a smaller hit box. Then i realized i would rather look at a female most the day then a male. Also i believe that the female characters look better than the male in general. The male characters look all bulky, i think that couldve been toned down a bit and maybe give the females a little bit bigger looking armor. All imo of course

        • I didnt even have to read the whole thing to know i completely agree with you (i will read it, seeing as you have very relevant valid points). Im also pretty sick of seeing these threads. Do people not understand what a Role Playing Game is? And really, isn't character customization just about looks...you're exactly right when you say this aint a dating site. I dont know why people get so bothered by it. Maybe they're trying to find a gamer gf but later get embarassed cuz they find its a dude? Idk, thats pretty pathetic. 2/3 of my characters are female, im a guy (my main is male). I dont think its weird when i see other guys playing female characters. Honestly its more badass to be some sexy alien fighter chick, rather than some cliché macho-man alien killer. Lame

Why would anyone care about someone playing a different gender than their own(let's not even broach the subject that not everyone is cis)? The only way I could see this being an issue is if you are messaging these female toons in hope that they are female. Are you? Are you messaging female toons in hopes they are females? Edit: not direct to the OP. You, as in, the complainer.

              • Why are you bringing this topic back, it's already been done to death and the eventual reality is that A MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DONT CARE. Stop making a goddamn huge deal out of it. People couldnt care less about this issue/topic now that it's been done a hundred times over. If you want to play a male, dont care If you want to play a female, dont care If you want to play as both, dont care

Therefore if you "should only play a man if you're a man" or "a woman if you're a woman" by this same logic and the Transitive Property we should also as males never read books or watch movies with female protagonists. And females should never read/watch when there are Male protagonists, and that ladies and gentleman is just plain silly.

                  • Ive also wondered why its such a big deal that people (male/female) have a playable character thats different than thier actual gender. Why does it matter? Are females only supposed to play games that have female lead roles? Nope. Are men never to play as Lara Croft, Jill Valentine or any of the females from the Borderland series? Nope. The entire argument is rediculous actually
