Ah ok thanks for explaining. Just for curiosity sake and to see how far behind I am when did all this calling people cis started?

Now that I am not sure of. I only recently found out about the term.

Not really long ago, at least that I know. Declaring one-self as cis is just a way of stating "Yo, I know about the stuff. I know about trans* issues. I'm an ally". It also helps to de-normalize cis, thus normalizing trans- In general, it's just a way of saying that you are an ally.
