1. Apparently you missed the new upgrade materials that lets you upgrade exotics....and possibly legendaries even further. 2. You only need to be max level for doing the raids on Hard Mode. So you only need the "raid gear" for doing the raids. For all other actiivities you can keep a collection of different exotic and legendary armors that fit your preferred playstyle, and then customize with your preferred shader... 3. Bungie never *promised* you that everyone would look different. They said from Day One that they wanted gear to be a readily identifiable badge of honor. If I run into a Warlock who is wearing Fragment of the Prime (bond) or Cuirass of the Hezen Lords, I know I'm looking at someone who has beaten the raid. If is seem someone carrying Thorn, I know I'm looking at someone who has defeated Xyor. If see a raid helmet, I know I'm looking at someone who's beaten the raid on Hard. As the game evolves, there almost certainly be multiple sets of raid armors, that you can then freely mix-and-match for a more individualized look when you aren't trying to do the most current raid.

  • You can get both fragment of the prime and COTHL without beating the raid

  • They can be "cheesed" by someone else giving you a checkpoint. But even that still requires someone else to have had success in the raid. At a minimum, having successfully fought their way INTO hte VoG.

  • No cheese involved from oracles to Gatekeeper on normal mode can get you both pieces of gear you mentioned. The only gear exclusive to beating the raid is the Helmet and VM on hard mode

  • Your defining "beating the raid" differently than I am. Yes, you are correct that you don't have to COMPLETE the raid in order to get these items. But you do have to successfully complete PARTS of the raid---where loot is given---in order to get these items. They aren't going to handed out as "random" drops on patrols or in Crucible matches.

  • You said if you see a warlock with both items you know they beat the raid,I just pointed out that just because you have those items doesn't mean you've beaten the raid

  • ...and I said---according to how you choose to define that term----you are correct. Which is why I then l clarified what I meant when I said that.

  • Actually last year they did "promise" through an advertisement that you could really customize your character to look and be truly unique. Well either that was a flat out lie, or they're holding back on the amount of armor they had. If you don't believe me, check out the various Destiny ViDoc's on YouTube. There are multiple scenes that they preview that weren't in the final cut as well...

  • Its not an either or statement. BOTH are true. It only becomes "less" true for those people for whom reaching level 30 is all-consuming, as there are very few equipment combinations that allow you to reach level 30 at this point. But the only activity that requires you to be level 30 is the Hard raid. However there are dozens of equipment combinations that allow you to get to lvl 28...and the vast majority of the end-game content only requires you to be level 28....
