Edit: Before you read, please note that this is not a comparison of games, but a comparison of $/content value.
TO ALL THE HATERS:
Most of us come from a FPS background in either COD, Battlefield, or Halo. And it seems there is a lot of us on here slamming Bungie, but can we please BACK THE CRAZY TRAIN UP?!!! I, myself, have been a COD person, so I'm going to speak specifically from that point of view
Let's look at the facts before drawing some conclusions:
1. Call of Duty games launch with around 10-11 multiplayer maps, then charges a fee for DLC (usually around $15) that includes around five more maps. There are four
of these DLCs in a "season". This DLC has no other content then those five maps and then maybe a new weapon
- Destiny launched with 11 multiplayer maps and the first DLC will introduce 3 more maps to the Crucible
2. Call of Duty games generally have an entertaining campaign mode that takes about 6 hours to complete. You are solo on this campaign.
- Destiny launched with a "campaign" mode that takes at least twice as long as a Call of Duty campaign, and can be played with up to two other friends if you want.
You can always play it solo if you choose. These campaigns do repeatedly start you in the same world over and over again, but take you through different parts of
that world to defeat different bosses.
3. Call of Duty puts in tons of micro transactions for character customizations, voice commentators, weapon skins, etc. that you pay real money to access
- SO FAR, Destiny doesn't make you pay any more for such customizations. There are tons of options already available.
4. Call of Duty's DLC includes only 5 multiplayer maps and maybe a gun for $15
- Destiny's DLC includes 3 multiplayer maps, a host of new weapons and armors, new drop items, a new raid, new missions and strikes, new shaders and it costs
only $5 more.
So, let's add all this up:
CALL OF DUTY - For a $60 game, and $40 of DLC ($60 if you don't buy the season pass) I get:
- Around 30 multiplayer maps, a 6hr campaign, some other kind of co-op mode that usually few people touch, a couple of added weapons, a number of looks (though your armor/camo/ghillie suit play no role in actually preventing damage), and that about sums it up
DESTINY - $60 game, $35 for DLC ($40 if you don't buy expansion pass):
NOTE - I'm going to estimate based on what we know of The Dark Below and apply it to the House of Wolves DLC
- 16 Crucible maps, an estimated 24-30hr campaign that can be played solo or with a small team, about 12-15 new weapons, 8-10 new armors (that actually do something besides aesthetics), three 6-player co-op Raid missions, multiple in-game currencies, a grimoire packed with story content (albeit very few people read, but it's more than COD has going for it), and that about sums it up.
My question is this; WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT???? Destiny offers so much more content then Call of Duty or Battlefield, or even any of the Halo games. You may not like the story as much (agreed, it was extremely lacking), but there is a ton in this game, the gameplay is tight, and for less money then what I pay in a year on Call of Duty I feel like I'm getting more content. I'm on Playstation, so an Xbox user may feel differently, but let's admit that for a new IP, this game has a ton going on.
CAN I GET A WITNESS?!

I disagree. the Metroid Fusion suit is still in game content, that is already on the disc, but you have to buy or borrow and perform extra steps to unlock it. Keep in mind that the suit is already there, fully completed and ready for use on the disc when you bought it, but you can't have it unless you go buy another game and a GBA. Besides this, the content that is on Destiny's disc is not completed, ready-to-play content that is just locked up on the disc. Those areas are mostly empty. It helps the developers to send as much on the disc, especially since these areas are continuations of the worlds we are already playing. If they do end up releasing new planets, just wait and see how large those downloads will be, because it's going to be a pain. They are helping themselves out a little by playing the framework on the disc so that they can fill it later.

I couldn't agree more. Yes it sucks that X1 isn't getting the extra content for another year, but that's probably Microsoft's fault anyhow and nobody's talking about that. Also, yes the story telling up til now has been lacking with disappointing voice acting BUT if like me, you have spent 1000s of hours playing Halo you shouldn't be surprised by this. Why? Halo has an epic story arc. Destiny, I'm sure will also have this- we know nothing right now. Nothing is clear and that shouldn't be a surprise given this is a ten year project. But ask yourself this: When did Halo 1-3 ever tell an enthralling story in a convincing way? The first time the Master Chief and Cortana voice actors were even in the same building was during Halo 4 production. And H4 wasn't even a Bungie game! All I'm saying is that Bungie = Combat Evolved, i.e. crip gameplay and smooth controls. It always has done. Aguably the only game they've ever made with an immersive story was H3:ODST. I'm as tired of stike playlists as everyone, but guys, give them a chance to develop the story and stop acting like wet red rags. Besides, masterchief collection is out soon! Rejoice.

It isn't supposed to be a stupid shooter, it was billed as an MMO. If you want to compare Destiny DLC to an MMO expansion, compare this to a WoW expansion. Much more accurate, and much more telling. If I wanted to play a stupid shooter, I would have bought CoD.
-
They never billed it as an MMO. That was the community's brand. This is not an MMO by a long shot
-
If you didn't want to play a shooter, then you shouldn't have bought Destiny. Bungie always said "this is not an MMO, it's a Shared-World Shooter". Sounds like you didn't do any research into this game before you bought it and thus, deserve to be disappointed.
-
Thank u for saying sir, apparently it's not said enough somehow, because bungie must've said like 10-15 times in their own stuff, in addition to like EVERY interview "this is NOT an MMO, this is primarily an FPS action game, with ELEMENTS that MMO/RPG players will be familiar with" ...sigh

Good comparison fellow guardian!

The dlc comes way the F down the road in those games and you have prestiges and in halo you have over 100 PvP levels to climb before your "done" this isn't even two months old what did we get for $60 that we shelled put 7 weeks ago?
-
Adam, how much time have you spent playing Destiny? Now, whatever that time was ask yourself, "did I have fun doing this?" If the answer is 'no', then take the game back, get credit and move on. If the answer is 'yes', then tell me why it was fun and what did you get out of it. At the end of the gaming session, I have had fun. I may have run a mission for the 50th time, but I had fun. It's called a game because you are entertained. If it isn't entertaining then move on. If you trade it in now you can get half your money back and then feel like you spent $30 on Destiny. Would that make you feel better?
-
I want to like it however we got all the same stuff in the beta. I remeber playing the beta and saying this is the best game on the Xbone ....and its a beta! I already wasted money on other flops this year and really getting half price in return value just 2 months since release ain't gonna cut it. I spent time on it yes, almost a 30 but it was mostly repeating old events and wandering looking for materials which was like day dreaming not engaging. Does this not bother you at all? That the game is flat this soon unless we fork over another 1/3 of the retail price?
-
I can agree that there is some monotony to the game. That's part of the MMO aspects coming out. Every role playing game has "grinding" where you do the same tasks over and over to build resources/levels. My team currently has not beaten the Raid on hard mode. So, we are grinding to get as high of a level as we can to beat it. I think what Destiny suffers most from is trying to be all things to all people. So it feels underwhelming to people looking for an MMO, or people looking for a new shooter. These complaints come mostly from missed expectations.......and an incomplete story
-
I agree with you on grinding that's fine I've done the bad ju ju bounty...25 strikes and I did them in a day so I understand the grind but it was so mechanical, only kill what needs killed, ride speeder until you physically cannot advance on it farther. That being said we didn't get much for our money in my mind. I've never had a game dry up so fast on me and the dlc was kind of a light at the end of the tunnel to breath new life and energy into this grind. But for what we get for this is a bad deal. Like many others say "we beat the game in 8 hrs" after that it's soley a grind. As for other people's expectations I've seen positive things from shooters and mmo players but transactions already? This is insulting.
-
You're an idiot. You can have fun with a game but still critique it. Destiny is far off from perfect and Bungie's shitty practices are just the tip of the iceberg.
-
I agree completely!
-
It's just not what they promised us a year ago is my complaint. Plenty of content for your $$$ Just not as they made it seen
-
Dead2me82 Fo President!
-
I second this
-
Yup. And just look at the amount of content already within the campaign. Somone should count the total different types of enemies and compare that to the competition. 4 different races and a bunch of different enemies in each race. Much better than any other campaign from halo 1 through halo reach. I get bored shooting the same 5 characters
-
Fact. It's nice to hear someone point out we guardians are fighting 4 different enemy races, not 1 or 2......4 of them. That is an awesome feature. Can't get enough of poppin heads off of these aliens, even taking the heads off the Vex just to piss them off and rage at me!
-
Great presentation of some of the facts. It is good to see a comparison from the fps standpoint. I don't usually play fps so I don't have the background of what to expect. I do have the background in mmo and rpg games. From that perspective, this game is falling way short in terms of value. The expectations of people from that background is way more content, including equipment, story and activities. This is a unique hybrid game that is combining so many different aspects. The down side of that is that there will always be angry people that want something different. People have the right to say what they think needs to be improved. Bungie's lack of response is what is creating the haters. They need a social media manager and things would be much different on the forums. If that job belongs to Deej, Bungie needs to replace him as he is failing at the job. After all that, basically I'm saying it's nice to see information from a different point of view.
-
I can agree with everything you've said. The hardest part of all of this is that Bungie has repeatedly said that this is NOT an MMO. They've created a new genre they call a "Shared-world Shooter". If we go by the definitions of MMO and FPS, then we all set ourselves up for missed expectations. If I take Destiny and remove all the labels, then I am left with a game that has unbelievably solid mechanics, an addicting loot system, sweet looking character customization, and.....an under-developed story. I love the game, but agree that I would have liked a deeper story and more MMO traits such as trading, mini games, better in-game communication, crafting, etc.
-
So you like getting shards from bosses or no set farm points for loot? Or getting random loot drops only to find out it's the same gear they sell in the tower vendors? I've gotten the same plan c fusion rifle 6x in 6x locations. But that's cool they should of referenced borderlands for help. Even defiance does a better job.

Edited by Talonia_: 10/30/2014 7:21:33 PMI agree with you, i am more of a MMO person myself but have done my fair share of CoD, in MMOs ,like destiny, you usually get 1-2 new areas 2-3 new <instance> and maybe if you're lucky 1-2 new raids. i say for a first DLC this is about on par. tho a new planet would be nice seeming they teased us with mercury in the crucible map <small team map<located in the fields of glass>> and in the live action trailer
