There's no narrative though. Do you just sit there and shut your brain off when you play? I could give a shit less about any character in this game. Including my own character.

  • Watch the live action trailer where they're just running around being bad asses. That's kind of how I see it. You were brought back from the dead to be a soldier in a war that you're probably going to lose. I don't expect wars that are so daunting to be concluded so quickly. In part, your experience as a soldier is the story. Sometimes I use my Time and Patience and stealth my way through. Sometimes I'm charging into a crowd to use fists of havoc. I don't understand why people need a story to follow and why they want it to have some conclusion already. If we had a 40 hr story like most rpgs, minus skyrim which is a good 80, then what would you do? What if the story takes years to tell? I'd rather have years of a developing story than one 40 hr one with dlc tidbits that are irrelevant when compared to the main plot.

  • Many game titles concern soldiers engaged in a war in defense of earth/humanity in which the odds do not favor survival. The entire Gears of War franchise focused on that theme, as did Mass Effect -- not to mention Halo. Yet those titles also included clear story content for each new release in the franchise. I imagine for Gears of War and Halo, that content was less important to players than figuring out ways to shoot as many enemies as possible and finish the final boss fight. However, there nonetheless was a consistent attempt to keep a story in place, that it affected how the later releases played. And GoW competitive mode was far more robust than Destiny -- especially the innovations introduced with GoW2, which largely revolutionized how competitive gameplay would occur. In the case of Mass Effect, people were so engaged by the story as it progressed from ME to ME2 to ME3, and its influence on character development, that few issues became as topical as did the ending of the series. But that controversy was driven by the fact that each release of Mass Effect/ME2/ME3 AND the DLC content all independently produced story-telling. The Shadow Broker DLC for ME2 was arguably as entertaining as any individual game. The Red Undead Nightmare DLC for Red Dead Redemption likewise was extraordinarily popular in part because it introduced an entirely new and original over-riding story to the game. Moreover, the Mass Effect franchise, while a single player RPG, nonetheless produced far more content across each game's individual universe than does Destiny, even as ME too encouraged grinding (e,g, mining on individual planets) and weapon development. Destiny does not fee it even was concerned with story content development. As a soldier/Guardian, at a minimum, shouldn't it at least matter WHY you were resurrected, and in what class of soldier? I mean, as a hunter, what do you substantively bring as a soldier that a titan does not? While your supers different, there is effectively no difference in class when it comes to use of weapons. I get that many people (obviously) are comfortable with the game is it exists now. It's a FPS, and a MMO, and I fully expect it to take core features from each genre. Many people clearly do have fun with the mechanics, the grinding, and the reward system. I myself am still playing so obviously there is entertainment built into the current design. However, I looked forward to each new development in the individual stories in franchises like Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption. Here, unlike opening Mexico for the first time in RDR, opening Mars felt like a different landscape with stronger opponents than earth, but in all other respects essentially the same experience as earth -- in part because there is no significant story that drives your anticipation of moving to another world. And to me, that is a huge disappointment.

  • Red dead, gow, and ME all single player based games that rely on content only. Sure gow had some pvp but it was lame imo. Realistically I can't explain why I have so much fun playing. I just do. It's cooperative pve that I enjoy the most and that has a lot to do with the people I play with.

  • Every genre employs features that are popular in other genres. The fact that ME, RDR, Skyrim, etc. are all single player RPGs does not negate the fact that their more robust story-telling can still be imported to some degree into other media like FPS and MMOs. In fact, both ME and RDR employ their own FPS elements in gameplay precisely because those elements are themselves popular. MMOs and single player RPGs share many common features already. Indeed, Elder Scrolls, for better or worse, is introducing an entire MMO franchise. And even though you feel GOW pvp was lame, at least it featured specific contests that Destiny pvp mysteriously does not -- such as capture the flag (also featured in RDR pvp). There's no reason that Destiny could not have borrowed the best elements of these other franchises, regardless of whether they were developed in the context of a single player RPG, an FPS, an MMO, or any other genre. I mean, at a minimum, would it be so terrible to at least employ enemy leveling? I don't exactly feel challenged on planet mission bounties annihilating Level 4 fallen on a regular basis, which is one reason that when doing those mission bounties I try to be near where public events will spawn. Please understand, I am not trying to convince you that you shouldn't enjoy Destiny. I'm still playing it too, after all. However, the lack of story telling, less-than-robust open world, and the odd omissions in pve and competitive gameplay content certainly are curious and, at least to me, disappointing. If it doesn't bother you, I understand and am completely fine with that. But ask yourself, if Destiny is intended to rely upon cooperative gameplay, and yet a significant number of original players leave the game due to tedium, doesn't that at some level also harm you? I mean, the more people playing Destiny the greater the pool of cooperative teammates, not to mention competitive pvp opposition.

  • There's nothing wrong with the gameplay mechanics I just don't care about what I'm doing or know why doing what I'm doing. If you wanna run around and hulk smash mindlessly this game is perfect but as for me I like having characters I care about and actually have motives. (E.g. Master Chief)

  • Think about the online aspect of destiny vs. Halo. Everyone would be running around as master chief right now. Yeah you care about that character but what's the difference between you and everyone else? Atleast my story mode character that I care about even if it's just a little is also my pvp combatant. The story will continue to develop so I'm not worried

  • I'm hoping it gets better. I've got Halo mcc and cod to hold me over until the expansion.
