Well that is just an illusion. You haven't earned it, in the same way that if you win the lottery you haven't earned your fortune. The people that complete tasks in exchange for payment, and then use that to purchase items have earned it.

I prefer the illusion though. I wouldn't say I enjoy 'earning' groceries with money, but I do enjoy winning 20$ with a lotto ticket even if it's random, know what I mean?

The point is the op should be thinking "lucky me that saved me 17 strange coins". But yeah it is more fun to get lucky, in the same way wining on a scratch card gives you more of a buzz than putting in a hard days work.
