ascendant shards

I need to get ascendant energy to upgrade my exotic weapon. What options are there to acquire the ascendant energy? I get random drops doing strikes but I would like to be more deliberate in my attempts. Thanks DoD for your reply. Oh yeah before I forget. Happy Halloween!
