The point is to have the option to enter into matchmaking like you do for strikes. Ideally, you would still reset all checkpoints on Tuesday and people would be placed into whatever checkpoint they last reached - sometimes mid fight to fill a disconnect or jumper, but most of the time at the beginning of each stage. Sure, unlock matchmaking only after the player has finished the raid once and make sure they have a mic. Of course, if you enter with 6 ppl then you won't be match made anyway, which is why I can never understand why there is any opposition to matchmaking by the hardcore lot in the first place!
It's great that you have a group of people you play with regularly, but at first they were probably randos. I've finished the raid with an organized group who ran me through and one which took the entire week, almost 7 hours total with multiple randos from the tower. Both resulted in the same amount of satisfaction because, at the end of the day, it's about the loot. The raid itself is not that hard - the rate limiting factor is finding the people to play with and Bungie has already proven that they believe we are all interchangeable with random teleports.
At this point, everything that matchmaking would otherwise achieve is attainable, but, just like the problem with the Grimoire, you have to leave the game to take advantage of third-party work arounds, which prove that it can work but that this game severely underestimates the sophistication and problem solving capacity of its player base - don't make the same mistake.
