It probably speaks to the personalities behind each gun. Not to generalize too much, but a casual shooter who does not read forums is going to generally pick an auto rifle as its very familiar. Where as handcannons probably feature more thoughtful, patient, and/or involved weilders who apparently patrol the forums quite a bit.
