No, there is a reason to want to kill a lot of enemies. To level up your gear. In speed runs I get less gear xp then I would if Ieliminate the enemies in the strike.

I am under the impression that to unlock weapon upgrades for my equipped AR I need to shoot things with it, right? The higher the level and more of them would seem like the best way to do that.

It will take ages to upgrade your gear and weapons by killing stuff.when you turn in bounties the xp goes straight to whatever your leveling

You are wrong. Equipped items gain xp. Watch them after you turn in your next set of bounties.

Yeah turning in bounties gets you hella xp and unlocks on weapons. Just make sure you got the weapon equipped that you want to upgrade.
