No, actually, it has very little to do with religion . Marriage carries with it a plethora of legal benefits in EVERY society. Not to mention that the monotheistic religions simply took a pre-existing social ritual (which came from societies that were 100% okay with homosexuality) and twisted it to meet their own ends.
