Seems like a lot of programming to have a glitch in the game like that.
I'll have to test this out specifically against enemies without shooting them to see, but I'm quite sure that you could still take damage while doing this.

You definitely can still take damage, and it's usually headshot damage as well.

Who knows.. so much goes into making these games certain things could get overlooked or have side effects due to interaction with others.. Destiny is pretty solid in this regard. Its pretty solid in every regard.
