Sympathy is the lowest form of human interpersonal connection. It's right next to pity. So, yes, sympathy sucks, and is pretty much worthless, except to make people pat themselves on the back. Empathy, though? Compassion? That's what people need. Not sympathy.

    Sympathy, pity and empathy are all synonymous with one another, and their worth is irrelevant; they're involuntary emotions. Edit; grammar.

  • They might be synonymous, but that doesn't mean they have the same meaning. They are very specific words with very specific meanings, ones that are completely valid and reflective in our culture. Also, there is a cognitive and affective aspect to each, and neither adhere to just "emotion", voluntary or not.

  • Sorry, I thought you wanted to discuss the relevance of the word sympathy in my original post, not semantics. I'll try better this time. It's a sad world when kindness and understanding are considered trends.
