The Crusades were launched to retake land that had been conquered by other empires. You know what caused every other war? The exact same thing, conquerors, desire for land, etc.

But one of the comendments (however you spell it) is "Thou shall not kill"

The commandment is typically understood not to apply to war. That is why plenty of Christians join the modern armed forces.
