I was doing some thinking on parallels that could be drawn between Destiny and Greek and/or Roman mythology. I don't want to rant so I will try to keep it as short as possible and you can go look up more specific details if you are interested... It occurred to me that the Traveler parallels Prometheus almost perfectly. Prometheus and his brother, Epimetheus, were spared from imprisonment with the other Titans after the war with the Olympians because they had sided with the Olympians instead of their fellow Titans. Zeus gave Prometheus the job of making man. Prometheus molded man from clay, gave man fire, skills, and helped them progress into a "Golden Age." Prometheus represents forethought and the future/ thinking or seeing into the future. The Traveler is said in the lore to have a "dark mirror." Now I think this could possibly be represented by Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, as he represents afterthought and the past/ thinking of the past. This makes me believe there may be a literal dark "mirror" of the Traveler. Perhaps, a past and future Traveler. One good and one that has been corrupted. Long story short, Prometheus tricks Zeus on two occasions. On the first, Zeus said man had to make offerings. Prometheus made two piles- one with bones covered in juicy fat and one with meat hidden with animal hide, and told Zeus to pick the one he wanted. Zeus picked the bones and was forever stuck accepting bone offerings because he had given his word that that would be his share. Zeus is pissed. Zeus gets back by having Hephaestus create Pandora, the "perfect" woman. All the gods give her gifts, such as beauty, skills, etc. , and also curiosity. They give her a box and tell her never to open it, and then give her as a gift to Epimetheus (who was at the time living among men), who accepts her, even though Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from the other gods. Of course she opens it and releases every woe of man into the world (perhaps paralleling the darkness), except "foreboding," which she manages to shut in before it gets out, so man still has Hope at least. And then Zeus takes away fire from man. Prometheus steals it back again. Zeus is enraged. Zeus sends Force and Violence to apprehend Prometheus and punishes him by chaining him to a cliff/ mountainside and having an eagle eternally eat his immortal liver that continues to regenerate. He can only be freed by way of an immortal sacrificing their life for him and a mortal must kill the eagle and unchain him. Eventually, Chiron the centaur sacrifices himself and Hercules rescues him generations later. In my mind this parallels how the Traveler is in some kind of paralyzed state, like it is chained up and cannot move, but is "healing." Some unknown conditions must be met to free it. The shard the Hive had taken was returned, so that may be one. I am tempted to take a leap and say Zeus represents the Vex... But I will let you guys speculate any other connections you can think of in regards to mythology. Feel free to correct me if I made any mistakes or left anything substantial out.
