Is this offensive to you?

I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know. Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it. So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot. Any thoughts?

    • It's satire against the stereotypical, red-blooded, country boy, redneck, jingoistic American. I don't fall into that category, so no, it's not offensive. I might judge you for saying it, considering how stale that phrase is, though.

lol. The only people that will offend are the people that are inherently being made fun of. For the rest of us, we're just going to laugh and say it with you. 'Murica. -blam!- YEAH!

    • As a white, male, middle class American, I find it exceedingly difficult to take serious offense to just about anything. I mean, are you aware of how good it is to be in my position? It flat out rocks. Even if someone did say something meant to be offensive to me, it would have as much impact on me as a bug impacting my F-150's windshield. 'Murica.

        • I don't personally care, but I know there are Americans who would go berserk if you said anything negative. Then a whole flame war would ensue of America vs [Insert Country Here].

          • Eva, People will have different personal reactions to the term " 'merica" and those will also be appropriated to the context it was used in. The overwhelmingly negative reaction to the phrase that you witnessed likely wasn't due to your teammate's being called a 'merican, but rather that your other teammate implied a generalization of Americans, specifically that they are dumb/uncaring for laughing at their own mistakes. Likely the insulting party was frustrated to begin with and lashed out with a sh!tty joke, but the insult stuck.

          • Most people I know who say that use it in reference to themselves after they've pulled an idiotic or suicidal move like blowing themselves up with their own rocket launcher.

          • I honestly say 'Merica a lot. I couldn't care if someone says that, would be very funny to me. But we would blame it on the other person, i.e. The Titan put up his shield right when I shot.

          • Huh... I'm American, and I don't find it offensive... Obviously I can't speak for all Americans, but... Most of the time when I see people say "'Murica", it's usually other Americans. In my experience we're pretty good-humored about our own cultural narcissism. And really, of all the things to get offended about, why that? Now, making fun of our health care system is offensive because that is a real problem for us that is cause for a lot of anger between our political parties. But "Murica!"? I'll laugh right along with you about that.

          • Saying "Merica" or "Murican" is a way to highlight the ultra-violent culture within the states. The "Merica" moniker is usually said after a violent, or destructive act for NO good reason... Thus, Merica.

The only time I hear it is when Americans are saying it about or between themselves. The same way I tell them I'm having tea with the Queen.

Us mericans ain't much fended at noth'n no'how. We ain't care noth'n bout stuff said on us none. We jus dont like play'n with them damn forners. Dont get theirr speek'n not one bit. Edit: translation: We here, living in the United States of America, typically don't allow ourselves to become, in any way offended at jokes, snide remarks, or otherwise crude or mean-spirited bantering directed at us as a nation. We prefer to brush these sorts of comments off. However, we admit to have some trouble understanding people of varying different cultures and backgrounds as us, and would rather not play with such people groups due to our lack of understanding of their language.
