Is this offensive to you?

I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know. Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it. So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot. Any thoughts?

  • This person used the term 'Merica incorrectly, it is originally a pseudo-redneck" battle cry" for doing something simply because you have the freedom to do so... not an insult. This was purely a stab at the individual and shows the person has disdain for America. In general. You read the situation correctly, it would qualify as a funny jab but could have also been offensive to the rocketman lol.

  • I refer to the part of America that I can't stand as "Murica" or "Merican"... such as anyone who voted for whoever that guy was...Romney or something. This country has gone to hell in a handbasket. Please make fun of us, we need the wake up call.

Generally speaking, I find humor in it. We use it tongue in cheek to poke fun at the more ridiculous extremes in American society and culture. Just like any derogatory word pertaining to a group of people, it's somehow more acceptable when coming from someone belonging to said group, and it's usually only perceived as acceptable from someone outside the group if the intent is clearly lighthearted and not malicious. The context and delivery you described it being used in wouldn't be so funny to me, though, as it feels like the speaker was serious. I don't like being associated with violence or stupidity because of gun laws, lesser educated people, or the decisions of my government.

    • You know what I find offensive? Mewtwo is only a playable character for people who got the 3ds AND the wii u version of super smash bros. this enfuriates me to no end.

      • Not really, no. If you ask me it just shows off that typical proud swagger that we Americans have, football, McDonald's, and everything in between.

      • Its a southern slang. I live in Texas and we say it pretty often. It refers to a red blooded, southern, republican America. Like saying "'Meria -blam!- ya!!!". That like is a good picture of 'Meria and nobody should be offended by comment.

      • Honestly it is a little offensive. It's an attempt at down playing or making fun of our country. It stems from the US be touted as a world police which is rude and a little ignorant. The US isn't a world police we are more of a world assistant. We simply try to help others who need it. When we do help we are chastised for it. If we don't help we are chastised for it. It's a true case of damned if we do or damned If we don't. The real shame of it is that US citizens actually believe what the media tells us. A lot of people still think we get our oil from the Middle East because that's what the media says. It a real shame. Of course part of our thinking is the freedom of speech. So you can say what you want.

        • Anyone who takes offense to anything some random says on the internet needs to do some constitution building. Seems some gamers are VERY emotional.

        • Don't overthink it. People might have been concentrating on the game, or may not have wanted to laugh openly for fear of making it offensive when it wasn't meant as such. Intent means a lot. If it didn't sound like it was meant meanly, it probably wasn't.

Part of being "Murican" is to take offense every time the wind blows. The term was created by Americans to poke fun at our own egocentric, blindly lead, conformist brethren. I say keep using it. Perhaps it will trigger a few of us to wake up. I've never personally met anyone who finds the term legitimately offensive.

        • I think you can make anything offensive (depends on delivery) but as an American I don't find it offensive in the slightest. If someone blew themselves up in a bubble shield and said "Merica" - I would laugh. Helps if you add "F&@? Yeah!" at the end... :) People take a lot of stuff way to serious these days. As long as it's not intentionally hurtful you have to be able to poke fun at yourself a little.

        • Depends on how much I like the person. If it was some random that I barely knew who had been pissing me off for awhile, then yeah, I'd probably be offended. In all other contexts, I'd probably just come up with something random to say and carry on.

        • I wanna say that it depends on the situation but I can't really think of one where someone calling me 'murican. I mean how do you even make that sound offensive? Lol

        • As a Vet it's not offensive to me. I say it all the time. However I guess one could make an argument that it depends on the context it's used in. If I'm in a group and someone is hanging out in the back not doing anything I'll tell them to "come up and join the fight Frenchy"

No its not offensive. But your teammate was being offensive. Now to break down what I mean let's look at it. The guy who blew himself up. If he would a gone 'murica after its funny. But the way you team then responded was well he takes the game to seriously and as such was intending offence. Now if he would a gone typical american it may have been funny if he used it with a light hearted voice or offensive if he said it with disdain. But the point in general it isn't offensive until someone is trying to be.

        • Not offensive... It's just a joke, so ur group member must not be funny. Although I get pissed when a Titan drops their bubble right in front of me. I've killed myself a few times with that happening.
