Hi Guys,
Me and my buddy are approaching level 28 (1 upgrade remaining) and we wish to start doing VoG soon. We've been reading/watching some guides and checking out some of your gear. What would you lvl 30's say is required as a minimum to enter a VoG raid (on normal)?
If possible, please don't specify it on gun name because they are hard to obtain. It would be easier if you could say the damage type and minimum damage/quality required.
Thank you for the help!
I will edit this post so it will become a shortlist of requirements.
EDIT: A summary of the answers:
The key factor: Communication, have a headset to call out when in trouble and listen
General advice: Play with a setup you are comfortable with and upgrade your weapons/armor as much as possible.
Primary weapon: preferably an AR, with 267+ damage (Shadow Price e.g.). A maxed other gun will do the same trick, but pulse and handcannon aren't the best options except if your skilled with them. Having multiple guns is usefull to adjust to the different engagements.
Special weapon: VOID damage is key for the start, a void Fusion rifle is preferred (77 Wizard). A sniper rifle is very usefull to have in various encounters.
Heavy weapon: VOID damage on at least one gun, a rocket launcher for the last boss is nice.
Misc: Ammo Synthesis for any weapon, buy plenty of each.
Pref. Subclass: Sunsinger, Defender and Gunslinger.
Nice to have: one or more experienced players to lead the team
EDIT 2:
Thank you for the great feedback everyone! I hope this post will remain on forum for some while so every starter can use it.

being 28 already gives u a good start but really a 26 with maxed out gear is just as capable. the reason level matters is because a 26 has a damage reduction against supplicants and atheon. but still not impossible. i have completed the raid many times on normal and hard. i would suggest using what you are good with. being comfortable with your gear can make a difference just as much as a high damage gun. i dont care if u have a maxed out suros or whatever. if u dont know how to use it youll be akward and start on a bad foot. that said. i find auto rifles and scouts are very good in the raid. hand cannons can work but the limited ammo and magazine are very detrimental imo. i started vog as 26 with a maxed out blue auto rifle, mid level ice breaker and a maxed blue void machine gun. this is just to give u idea of my setup at first. now i run a maxed vision, maxed ice breaker, and swap between a maxed steel oracle and mid level corrective measure.i would keep a void weapon of some sorts on u at all times. ull want to strip shields as fast as possible. snipers are very good weapons to have in inventory. at max damge any legendary sniper will one shot most mobs except praetorians, even in hard with a crit hit. and when your heavy runs out, and it will, youll want that high peak damge side arm to switch to. i have clan mates who use shotguns very efficientlyagainst mobs and oracles. personally the limited range is not my cup of tea. good luck getting close to atheon or the templar to get that max damage. on that note: AMMO SYNTHESIS. keep many on you. you will run out and u may not always have the cover or time to grab ammo in the open. above all esle, communicate with your team. for instance during the templar confluxes. if one side is being overrun with mobs, u may need the mid to float and help. they cant know this without communication. talk to your team. be prepared to have a bad run. on average my clan and i run the entire normal raid in an hour or less. but there will be glitches and there will be hiccups. dont sweat it just learn to cope. a very important note. everybody needs to learn how to use the relic. it didnt matter before the update because u could choose who goes in the gates. now its random, so u all need to know how to use it. the relic holder is the key player. learn it and learn it well. i cant think of anything else so ask if u have any questions. good luck

You can do vault at 27, but obviously 28 is a bit better. Try and make sure you have at least all legendary guns, if possible. Upgraded is preferred. I did it with some guys the other day who were still running with blue guns. We beat it but it definitely took longer than it needed to. Don't be afraid to ask questions once inside.

I'd say the safest bet for normal is being a level 28 because the supplicants are level 28 in atheons room. For guns just go with something that you're comfortable with and does about 267+ damage Void damage for the beginning with the praetorians, and after that it's all preference.

What console are you on?

Don't take penalties when you can avoid them. This means upgrading armor to level 27 and weapons at or above 267 to deal with all of the enemies in the normal raid (completion requires fighting level 27 mobs, and to this poster's knowledge is the only instance in Destiny where the enemies are higher level than the mission itself). Anything beyond that is marginally helpful, though unnecessary. Ensure that each party member has the ability to deal Void damage. Minotaurs and Praetorians show up with Void-weak shields. Each is a capable threat to your group. While unnecessary, each character should have unlocked the perks related to the Agility stat as their subclass allows. This is useful for certain parts of the raid that don't require as much Armor or Recovery. Your fireteam should have a good mix of weapons to deal with corridors of different length. My personal suggestion is that each member should have a Sniper Rifle and a Fusion Rifle on-hand.
-
Get an auto rifle that and replace the handcannon. I recommend Shadow Price (Vanguard Vendor). Full upgrades would be preferred so you could have the highest possible DPS. At 27, you're more than capable of running the raid. You're weapons need to be buffed, though. Be prepared to die, a lot. If you happen to get some experienced people on the team, listen to their direction. If you can get your hands on the relic, do so. Learn by doing with that. Everything else is shoot, kill, repeat. And, for the love of god, stay away from supplicants and gorgons. Those are some of the fastest ways to cause a wipe. Good luck and may RNGesus smile upon you.

As a lvl 30, I will not raid(hard) with anyone who is below 29 and who hasn't already done it at least 5 times on hard. You have to pick up slack on a lvl 29, so it helps if they at least know what they're doing. Also, must have a fully unlocked raid weapon. There's no use for a level 29 with no raid useful weapons. Person must also have good listening skills and willing to follow to the tee. Most lvl 30s already have a steady raid team of able lvl 30s, so doing the raid with lvl 29s is pretty much a favor.

Well for normal you don't need to be 30. 26-28 will do it. Obviously the higher the better because you'll have an easier time but as for requirements as soon as the VoG is unlocked for you, you are good to go. For damage types, you want VOID to deal with the Praetorians and taurs. I will drop a name because it is easy to obtain. With 150 Crucible marks you can get yourself the 77 wizard. It should one shot the shields. As for primary, I would use a fairly good AR. Can't go wrong with suros. Anyways, something with good impact and a lot of bullets. Trick is to shoot with the void gun like the wizard to knock off the shields and then switch to the AR to finish them off. Also entering with weapons that are maxed out is a good idea. When doing the raid and the defending portions make sure to split up evenly. Strong + weak, Titan + Warlock etc. Definitely not Hunter+hunter. You kind of wanna go 1and1 if you can. We usually run 3 titans 3 locks.

Just go for it

If you're both 28 with all maxed weapons (whichever you enjoy) then you shouldn't have any issues really. The only piece of advice is to bring something for the void Minotaur shields like a fusion or heavy that's void. The biggest thing is maxed weapons though really.
-
You don't need advice from 30's, best advice is from people who are experienced in Raid of which many will be 29 and/or 30. Being Level 28 is a big plus. Take Void weapons (sniper and/or fusion rifle, MG and Launcher - even blues will do for Normal). You shouldn't need many if any at all for normal, but take Ammo synthesis (esp heavy). In most scenarios, you need to be in small teams, groups of twos or threes, make sure every one knows exactly where they are for each section. If you have someone experienced in Raid in your party, listen to their advice (usually its useful or important). Call out minotaurs and take out Hobgoblins quickly. Don't try to hug Legions. Supplicants are explosive harpies. Its better to hide and recover after you have been shot, rather than try to be a hero, goblins/minotaurs will move a few feet by the time you have recovered. Have patience, you may have to wipe a few times if your in an inexperienced group. But practice makes perfect.

Granted it took 7hrs and lots of dying but we did it. I just ran the raid in 2hrs with my hunter at weekend when he hit 28. I would say some good weapons mainly void damage and a decent primary that is not a hand cannon or pulse rifle. A decent machine gun and rocket launcher are good and void damage for Minotaurs A good team is more important to be honest I first ran it with... Suros Blue fusion rifle void damage Blue heavy machine gun void damage I now run with either Suros or Atheons Epilogue Patience and time or Epitah or Preadeths Revenge Prestige IV or Truth Most are maxed out.

Edited by kootahKENTei702: 11/17/2014 2:06:21 PMIf ur at least lvl 26 ur meet all my requirements for normal haha. Thats cuz me and a few other lvl30 clan mates run people normal mode for fun. Edit: also if u happen to be on 360 add me will teach u the ropes rather quickly.

Edited by Flyinpenguin117: 11/17/2014 2:33:22 PMHit Level 28 for normal. It helps a LOT, especially during the final battle, since Supplicants are level 28. Hit daily stories and public events for Ascendants. Spend excess marks and strip down the gear. Get full Legendary gear (do whatever it takes to replace that Sniper), hopefully with at least 1 fully upgraded weapon (or at least before Ascendant level), and a Void weapon for Minotaurs. Fusion rifles are best (this doesn't have to be fully upgraded, but show it some love before). Rocket Launchers are best for heavy weapons. Set up your perks well. I'd recommend Titan Codex I and V and Juggernaut, plus whatever grenades work for you. Don't be afraid to use Defender, as its a bit more useful in the Raid, especially with Void grenades and Armamentarium against Minotaurs. Hopefully this helps. I wish you the best of luck.

Some kind of void based special weapon/heavy for shield stripping. Then whatever you prefer for a primary. Teamwork and communication are the most important weapons to equip.
-
Lvl 27+ Void weapons (maxed if possible) Ammo synthesis
-
Level 26+ for normal Minimum level 29 for hard, with everything else maxed out and experience on normal Void damage for taking shields off, but anything really. I always recommend to my crew to use a primary they are comfortable with, Ice Breaker or other sniper, Heavy Machine Gun Sometimes I switch and use a Fusion/Rocket combo Unless you really wanna figure out how to do the raid yourself, Id recommend reading/watching guides online. I doubt you will find a fireteam that wants to let you fail for hours lol Good luck!

A level 30's idea on what you should use isn't necessarily correct, I have seen heaps that know very little and many that know a lot. Lets not forget that the level/rank system in this game isn't like Bungie's previous games... it doesn't actually represent your skill level.
-
28 is perfectly fine for VOG normal. As far as weapons just make sure you have at least one void type. (Preferably a special weapon like fusion or sniper. Shotguns aren't that useful.) Minotaurs can be tough at times. The rest is really down to skill and understanding the mechanics.
-
A good attitude and don't be afraid to ask about something if you don't understand what is going on.

Edited by TheNovafire: 11/17/2014 1:33:52 PMThe best advice I can give you is to find a good group that knows you are relatively new to raids. This will let them know that you might need a couple pointers on where to stand and what to do. In terms of guns...I prefer hand cannons since they can 1 shot all hobgoblins/goblins (TDYK). You will need a sniper rifle (Atheon/Templar if you dont cheese it/Gatekeeper) and a void damage weapon (could be your heavy). Minotaurs can be a problem here and there. Weapons are important but overall skill matters more. Don't be afraid to hide in order to get your shield up/call for help. Have seen lvl 25 guardians go into the raids. Higher the better for damage (weapons) but anything will do. Just might have to be carried a little here and there. Wouldn't let that limit you from doing the raid.

I did my first raid a couple of weekends ago as a level 27. For that I used Super pox vlo (pulse rifle, upgraded except for 3 that need ascendant energies) Patience and time (sniper, half upgraded) Steel oracle (rocket, upgrades except for 3 that need ascendants) I guess the weapons themselves aren't as important as the following though - none of the weapons were fully upgraded - none are what people normally tell you you need for the raid - none had void damage - I did have an exotic helm fully upgraded but my other armour was non raid legendary upgraded except for last 3 slots (like weapons) - I did not feel underpowered either in terms of firepower or defence - I did however die a few times, but mostly because I was new to the raid - I had a good team (found via lfg) who talked me through the strategy side (by FAR the most important aspect) - first raid took 2 hours and I definitely wasn't carried - while I used a pulse primary I think either an auto rifle or hand cannon is probably better, you either want to be one shotting as much as possible or laying down a wall of bullets, pulse is neither here nor there as it takes too long to always be aiming for criticals but without criticals didn't one shot much From my experience it sounds like you and your friend are at the right level to get stuck in. So long as your gear is all legendary and exotic you will be fine. The more it's upgraded the less hard you will find it. Just let people know at the outset you are first timers so they know to coach you rather than just tell you to do x or y. I've found people on the raid really pleasant to play with, though I guess some out there want to rush through as fast as they can and could be a bit antsy. If you are ps4 happy to join you guys. PSN is as my screen name here. I'm still learning (couple of raids only) so we'd need one or two experienced players also. Hope you enjoy it when you get a chance to give it a go!

Whatever legendary primary you want as long as its fully upgraded, and any void type secondary and heavy, also fully upgraded.
